I think automatically sending a child to a deaf school without even looking into its quality and settings is not "looking out for the best for their child" but I don't think a lot of people of the deaf community would question this.

Wanna know how a parent knows what he/she is doing the best for his/her child? Ask him/her why those choices. If he/she has a well thought out answer (whether you agree with it or not), then he/she is. Simple as that.

As is evidenced by the lack of response in this thread, you can ask, but rarely do you get a direct answer. However, there is another thread that the poll results will give a lead into the reasoning.

The exact opposite - a hearing person who is very much involved in Deaf World would be called 'Dearie'.

Agreed. The point is that a deaf adult, no matter the reasoning behind it, is making their decision from the perspective of the person they are...a deaf person. A hearing parent is making the decision from the perspective of a hearing person. At least this is the case more often than not.

I'll explain it. The sign actually glosses to [HEARING THINK]. While some might find it offensive, I find it to be accurately descriptive.
 
oh.... I guess I am a Hearie/heaRfie.... :tears: Not that I act like one but I was taught to be like them.

Isn't this sign also made with the letter "L" brought towards and against the forehead? I don't know...perhaps I'm thinking of an entirely different sign. :hmm:
 
Jiro/Jillio, glad we got those two words squared away because I was worried about heafie being too close to heifer. :lol:

Yes. That would gloss to "LISTEN THINK" and is more of an MCE based sign.

Exactly, my point was that people are being judgmental on too little information. Simply saying "I just implanted my child" generates way too many :noway: before asking "Oh what kind of an environment is your child in?". Same way as too many deaf people are responding :yesway: to "I just put my child in a deaf school." before asking for clarification what sort of a deaf school (since there are many types!).

Yes, that!! Ugh.. it drives me nuts. Just like a deaf couple hopes to have a deaf baby. What ever happened to a healthy baby? :Eek 3:

You might want to check out the poll results in dreama's thread. Looks like "want my child to hear" and "mainstream education" are the two most popular answers. Is anyone asking which mainstream school?
