I just took up a habit of eating a bowl of oatmeal a day. I've read constantly and the doctor has told me constantly that a bowl of oats a day will help lower my cholesterol.

I'm wondering if my eating habits would negate this?

Regardless, eating oatmeal with little flavor takes some getting used to.

Actually, but oatmeal itself doesn’t lower your cholesterol but fiber in the oatmeal itself help lower your cholesterol.

Sure, it can help lower your cholesterol but it should be along with a health diet and exercise.

Oat bran have more fiber than oatmeal. (example weetbix, wholewheat/grain, brans etc)...

I eat porridge and muesli (homemade is better to add fresh fruits, plain joghurt with wholewheat oatmeal) in most mornings.

I do eat oatmeal once a while and they do help lower cholesterol. Another healthy breakfast to eat :)

Yeah it does help me a lot when I sometimes eat oatmeals in the mornings...it's good for your own health. Oatmeals has new high fibers and different kinds. It also has a lot of enegry.

I lost weight on a high-fiber diet three years ago. I plan to slowly get back there so this is one start.

Sprinkle some raisins with it or some brown sugar. At least that would assist with the flavor.

That is what I am trying to do but everytime I eat this hot bran cereal in mornings, I get horrible stomach pains for the entire day. Is it the fiber or grains I am reacting to? I dont have problem with eating vegetables or beans but grains, I seem to. Know anything about this?

i like oatmeal from quaker with fruit like banana or strawberry or blueberry (i don't put too much sugar, just little bit) and yes, it's good for you and also for the heart disease.

nothing wrong with eating oatmeal. ;)

i'm off the topic

I've got a copy of a study I can send you if you like. But pay particular attention to the fact that it was done with only women, and with registered dieticians who had a healthy diet to begin with, and whose cholesterol was not out of line to start. Of course the results show that oatmeal lowers cholesterol, but the methodology and the sample population make the results open to scepticism. But I found it interesting, if for no other reason than most people just take it at face value without looking any further.

It is the fiber...I am not a doctor nor an expert but I think your body doesnt get enough fiber and when it does, hence the reaction.

I eat oatmeal often or eat foods with high fiber so I hope that is helping my system. :giggle:

Hey, the doctor told me. Then again, if he's a liar, I don't have to go back to him. ;)
