Store's e-mail slams soldiers in Iraq

Jason Hess, an Army sergeant stationed in Iraq, wanted to buy floor mats so his soldiers wouldn't have to sleep on the ground. He sent an e-mail to a Wisconsin retailer to ask if they would ship to a military post office.

Here's the response he received:

SGT Hess,

We do not ship to APO addresses, and even if we did, we would NEVER ship to Iraq. If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq.

The response to this e-mail from outraged blog readers and talk-radio listeners has been fierce.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports "Bargain Suppliers of West Allis said its discount-mats.com Web site had to be taken down Monday to address the thousands of e-mails it's received since news of the exchange - in which an employee voiced opposition to the war in Iraq - began circulating on the Internet last week."

A company official told the newspaper the employee who wrote the e-mail is being "'held accountable.' But he said the incendiary and threatening nature of some of the e-mails - and voicemails left at the West Allis home that co-owner Faisal Khetani shares with his parents - have shaken the family."

The owner's father, a Pakistani immigrant who holds U.S. citizenship, told WTMJ he was offended by the e-mail. "Whatever the person said - was not fair - should not have said that," he told the station.

The family's phone rings every few minutes, and WTMJ says their answering machine is full of angry messages, such as: "You terrorist loving jihad mother ((expletive)). This is America you son of a ((expletive)). You get the ((expletive)) out of this country."

He should not mad at the soliders but US Government. If he want to be angry then say to Bush or US Government directly, not soliders. It's them who sent/force soliders to Iraq war.

Why didn't US Government supply the mats for soliders when they need mats?

Chances are the government didn't think they needed the mats.

Secondly, many businesses don't send to military addresses which is normal.

But I know that if the supporters want to support soliders with things then use military addresses because they will not pay the cost of shipping with military addresses to any war countries. ?

You can ask but doesn't necessairly mean that they will get it.

The reasoning behind this is that one doesn't want to overburden the soldier with frilly things. Remember some of these soldiers may have to pack at a moment's notice to move around. The less they have to take with them, the better.

1. I am appalled at their response. I wonder who wrote it.
2. As Rumsfield said, "You go to war with the army you have - not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time." It is unfortunately true. Mats are not Army-standard issue equipment. If you want the mat - go to local village and buy it yourself. Or just pay the local to buy it for you. Beside - why mats? Army already provides poncho liner aka woobie and blanket.

If Lt. Watada was there at office in Iraq... he could probably pull some strings to get mats for them.... oh wait he pulled some string for himself.... :topic:

About a week after the original incident, the Discount-Mats.com web site came back up with the following message displayed:
Due to the recent actions of a member within our company, we have been experiencing many difficulties. We have been bombarded by emails and phone calls literally within 12 hours of the event occurring, which sent us in a state of complete shock.

Our technical difficulties were experienced due to severe e-mail and phone call overload.

As a company, we would like to say that it is against company policy to treat anyone disrespectfully, and we condemn any such behavior. The member who was responsible for stating their personal opinion in a disrespectful manner is no longer associated and no longer working with Discount-Mats.com

The members within our company strongly disagreed with the views and actions of this member, and once again, his personal opinion does not reflect the opinions of the company.

We, as a company, are sorry for the events that took place and we do not condone un-professional, rude behavior from any members within our company.

So, given the above, it seems to me it would behoove this company, for purposes of "saving face", would go ahead and send some mats.....gratis, right? Kinda like what a lot of donut shop owners and cafes do.....free coffee and donuts for the men in blue, eh?

Even if old it is still relevant. I think the company did the right thing to get rid of the employee who sent the response. But they probably only did it to try to salvage some of their business.

I agree. Fingers are being pointed in the wrong direction.

That kind of thing will not make me hate the company either. It was a specific employee that did this and proper action is being taken.

That kind of thing will not make me hate the company either. It was a specific employee that did this and proper action is being taken.

There is also another side. How do we know they aren't making a scapegoat out of him? They could have told that employee to type that statment and then noticed all the negative comment and changed their tune.

It´s company´s written but we don´t know employee´s side. It sound bit skeptical to me to blame someone... Normally the employee forward the open letters to their boss. If the owner/boss approve or disapprove then get their employee to do something for them. It´s hard to beleive that the employee responsed SGT´s letter without forward SGT´s letter to the owner?
