Bush: I regret talking tough before war in Iraq
U.S. president admits tone made him look like 'not a man of peace'

LONDON - President Bush admitted Wednesday that his tough rhetoric had given the world the impression he was a "guy really anxious for war" and said he now wished he had used a different tone on the global stage.

In an interview with London-based The Times newspaper, Bush said his main aim in the seven months before his presidency ends was to leave his successor a diplomatic framework for tackling Iran.

Bush voiced regret at divisions in the international community created by the war in Iraq, adding: "I think that in retrospect I could have used a different tone, a different rhetoric."

'Dead or alive'
He admitted that his use of phrases such as "bring them on" and "dead or alive" had "indicated to people that I was, you know, not a man of peace."

Bush, who is in Berlin on Wednesday for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel about building pressure on Iran to give up its uranium enrichment program, is due to fly on to Rome, Paris and London to seek further support for the effort.

Despite three rounds of sanctions by the U.N. Security Council, Iran has refused to stop enrichment. It says its atomic program is aimed at creating electricity rather than nuclear weapons.

Bush told The Times he wanted to "leave behind a series of structures that makes it easier for the next president" to tackle issues such as Iran's nuclear program and establishing a Palestinian state.

His successor, Bush said, is likely to stick to the current policy after assessing "what will work and what won't work in dealing with Iran." He urged the world to work together and "keep focused."

Bush also offered supportive words for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, whom he is scheduled to meet on Sunday, and who is facing tough times at home with support for his Labour Party and for his leadership fading fast.

"(He is) plenty confident and plenty smart, plenty capable" Bush told The Times. "He can sort it out."

I remember reading an article about Bush. Tony Blaire (who opposed Bush when he heard he was "elected") said Bush is actually is a very funny man - as in humourous and fun to be around. I guess we don't see the other side of Bush, thanks to the media.

When he was "elected", I think the world knew he wasn't a man of peace anyway. I guess his father's past makes him look bad... And, to be fair I think he had to act tough to promote his war against terror even though he also used demented words in his speeches.

I wonder how his public image would look like if 9/11 didn't happen?

That's what you get for making too many wrong first statements.

Liebling - if you're thinking he's admitting Iraq War was a mistake, nope. Nice try but he only regretted talking tough - that's all.

Excuse me, I can read... and witnessed his talk with Chancellor Angela Merkel on TV.

Please don´t jump consulusion and assumption toward me because you don´t like that I posted to prove you all that what and how he did. He admitted that he regretted for made harsh tone talk over Iraq War. It´s good that he admitted it because I do not like the people deny it.

Yes, thing would be different if he talk normal.

Please don´t take my thread, question or links personally. I do not accusse anything but question, show the links and choose my decision differently as you.

I know well enough that your intention is to make people aware that Iraq War is a mistake and illegal but technically - it isn't illegal unless the War Tribunal Court has declared it so and I'm just making sure people did not misunderstood Bush's speech.

The real is who did behind Bush? He is just a pawn.

Do you assume that ADers can´t read or misunderstand any threads or posts?

I would advise you to re-read your own thread and learn to not take ADer´s posts and threads personally.

his $$$ cronnies, defense contractors (like Blackwater), and oil companies :hmm:

you really think it'll all just change and go away when Obamas president? Not overnight it wont. Probaly will take him 2 terms just to scratch the surface.

I think you are right on the mark. It's going to be a very very long journey for us all to make amends with the world.

It's Dick Cheney.

I think Dick Cheney is the mastermind of this sick twisted war profiteering scheme. Bush is a goof - he's a funny man and I like him a lot as a regular Joe. But as a President.... he's just not very good at deciding on serious matter.

The greater atrocity that I see, with this confession, is that he believes that the people would be more sympathetic to his agenda if he did not have an aggressive, presidential public relations image.

Many people are not angry because he had a Texan drawl, missing a cowboy hat, and was, like many Americans, angry. I think many people rooted for him when he wanted to pull a John Wayne "Cowboy Justice" on the world.

Surely, he's not that clueless? Another reason to be with great doubt.
