It first thing bother me when people were cheer for her as deaf and use sign language.

I start to feel little funny and yet disappointment when I learn that she is very root for Special Olympic, not even mention Deaflympic. Yet, I start thought about it when I was in Utah for Winter Deaflympic. She never been seen in there. What's fricking with it??!?

Oh yeah, I tried to bitching over her twitter and never receive any respond or even mention at all. Lame lame!

Special Olympics, Best Buddies, VSA Arts..Charities I am proud to support and be a part of thanks to the The Kennedy/Shriver/Smith famliies.

Twitter / Marlee Matlin: Special Olympics, Best Bud ...

I dont know what to say. I dont really care what she does in her business but I am just glad she is out there showing that Deaf people who use ASL are just as capable.

maybe she doesnt care, and we dont have a right to say "you Must care!" then again , think about it, she isnt "really Deaf" just deaf, all the hype about her, is just for show business nothing else, and she's one of those 'overcomers' meaning to say that she's deny who /what she really is. It a paradoxial thing that they allows her to feed on it, and so she's basically a parasite of 'Deaf culture' for her own gain.

How do you know one of her own kids isn't in Special Olympics?

Maybe, Marlee Matlin had other commitments handling a busy schedule. Its pretty neat, she's signing and uses an interpreter. All kudos to her :)

I never really got in the whole whether or not Marlee Matlin is deaf or Deaf debate. Not everyone has to fit a certain role that society or a group expect them to.

She's an actress who use ASL and is deaf. The goals and challenges are very much different than what we face; I know this from having a few friends who are in the acting field. So in my book? She's into Deaf culture. I don't really care about her, except what she does on the screen.

WHO CARES????? as long as she does ASL and does not promote oralism, fine with me!

Well, the top priority is probably her kids first. *Shrug*

Good for Marlee that she does whatever. She is deaf. She is an actress. Does that make her automatically a role model? She is a good actress. She supports charities. She portrays strong Deaf woman characters. She dances on TV and shows what she can do. I am happy that she is able to do these things. That is a great example. Just a granny's opinion. Of course I am late deaf, not Deaf. I am still a strong, able, deaf woman. No less proud. So there. (grin)

Maybe she does have Deaf friends but she doesnt exploit them to the media.

I know Marlee. She and I went to the same school, Center on Deafness in Des Plaines, IL before they moved to Northbrooks, Il. I was there from 82 to 85. Seen her alot there. She was also best friends with my ex-gf. That's where she learned acting before she landed the stage play "Children of a Lesser God" and ended up getting the movie role based on the stage play.

Thank you.

You guys had to know I was going to get into this! lol! Anyway. To be honest with you, I can understand both sides. Deaf & deaf. And you can agree or disagree with me. But this is my opinion...

Marlee has a lot to keep up with. Being in mainstream Hollywood, she is widely known. She needs to try to please two groups of people. Deaf and hearing. I'm not trying to say that they are complete opposites, but think of how hard that must be. She mentioned the Special Olympics on Twitter as one of the MANY charities that she supports because of the death of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She never in any way said that she doesn't support the Deaflympics. So I don't see any reason to "bitch" at her because of something she never said. She is an advocate for every Deaf person in the United States. She proves that being Deaf isn't a restriction. It can't hold you back from doing what you want. If she didn't support the Deaf community, she would talk and read lips everywhere she goes rather than sign. But she doesn't. Why? Because she IS proud to be Deaf. And I don't agree that she uses being Deaf for her own gain. What exactly does she gain from it?? I just think that she takes a lot more heat from people than she deserves. Don't get me wrong, Marlee isn't perfect. No one is. We all have our flaws. All I'm asking is for everyone to please try to understand where she is coming from and what she has to deal with. I respect everyones viewpoints on this. I do.

Okay. My rant is over
Sorry guys.

:ty: too, that was good one :laugh2: If you didn't get in on this one - I posted wondering where your comment was, after all "Matlin Fan" pretty much says it, huh? Very good reply though.

. . . Marlee has a lot to keep up with. . . She needs to try to please two groups of people: Deaf and hearing.

I couldn't disagree more! Deaf people think she's not deaf enough and hearing people accept her. So, who's really the ones with the problem? Who cares what Deaf culture say? She's done a heck of a job and continues to do it despite how many of them have spit in her face. What has Deaf culture done for anyone? It takes oral deafs to come in to this site and literally force Deaf culture to change, as hearies won't change and Deaf need to accept it.

. . . I just think that she takes a lot more heat from d/Deaf people than she deserves . . .

Frankly, in order to communicate with others in the world, Deaf need to know how to do it, not just within themselves. There's a whole world out there to discover, deaf people. Don't let anyone dictate to you that you're not deaf enough because they don't know you. Neither were they in the sound booth when your hearing was tested.

I think she is a great actress but it would be nice if she sign a little more often. I see her talking lately.

Well, I don't blame her for that. :)

Seems like you hate the Deaf community? Not everyone in the Deaf community is like that..FYI.
