Thought it would be a good idea to gather books in this thread that people thought were really worth-while....
Make sure you add a publishing date because for CI-related books, 3-year old books are allready OLD!

I'll start off with the following list:

Books & films regarding deafness, deaf culture, history
* "Seeing Voices" by Oliver Sachs - 1990
* "Mask of Benevolence" by Harlan Lane - 1993 (The CI-part of the book is really out of date and really not valid any more.)
* "A Journey into the Deaf-World" by Harlan L. Lane, et al - 1996
* "When the mind Hears" by Harlan Lane - 1989
* "Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language: Hereditary Deafness in Martha's Vineyard" by Nora Groce - 1988
* "Sound and Fury" by Josh Aronson and Scott Davidson (Documentary)
* "Laurant Clerc: The Story of His Early Years" by Cathryn Carroll - 2002
* "Mr. Holland's Opus" Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation - 1996 (Film)
* "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson Cullers - April 2004
* "Children Of A Lesser God" Paramount Home Entertainment - 1986 (Film)

Books and films regarding CI
* "Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human" by Michael Chorost - 2006
* "Wired for Sound: A Journey into Hearing" by Beverly Biderman - 1999
* "Sound and Fury" by Josh Aronson and Scott Davidson (Documentary)
* "Cecilia's Story Introduction" and "Hearing Your Life " available from by Advance Bionics (Documentary)
* "Jacobs journey" available from Cochlear (Documentary)

This for now... more to come

Thanks for the info, Cloggy. I wonder how many anti-CI and "doubtful"-CI will ever read Chorost and Bidermann books..

and a book by Carson Cullers "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" that contains deaf character.

Yep, seen / read it. Added it to the first post..

Started on Carson Cullers "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" but found it hard to get through.

My wife found another book about growing up deaf. "Deafening" by Frances Itani - 2003... About a deaf girl growing up (beginning 1900), going to a deaf school, marrying, husband to the war (WW-I). My wife loved it.

There were some books I borrowed from the library but forgot the name but I did post snippets from the book elsewhere in AD and somewhere on the net.
http://www.alldeaf.com/showthread.php?t=27374

* "Deaf World A Historical Reader and Primary Sourcebook" edited by Lois Bragg published 2001 (will post snippet from that book in AD for sure will be a hot topic) This book is suggested reading for Cloggy.

Yes, that is the one.. the one I borrowed was a hard cover. I checked the chapters and yes, that's it.

Out of my league. I have no knowledge of the system in USA, but I can see the contradiction between saying "Deafness is not a disability" and "collecting disability support".

Wonder what Sweetmind, SxyPig and others have to say about it.
but that is only from one chapter, there are more chapters go to amazon.com to look at the TOC to see all the chapters by clicking the on the cover art

Did that (See my link elsewhere and your PM...) and looked promising so I ordered it. Thanks for the tip..

I vaguely remember reading a book when I was 10 or 11 about a deaf/mute girl who finds a statue of a baby, I think it was called "A Single Light"

From Cloggy's post:
* "Mr. Holland's Opus" Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation - 1996 (Film)
* "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson Cullers - April 2004
* "Children Of A Lesser God" Paramount Home Entertainment - 1986 (Film)

I find it interesting that these were made into movies (well, you already noted "film") and did any of you ever see the movie "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter"? I just cannot remember the title character's real name (Alan something?). VERY good!

And does anyone recall a movie (I can't remember if it was movie or made-for-TV titled "Johnny Belinda"? I know the actress but again I forget the name. I don't think it was captioned.

(and yes, I AM old! LOL)
