What caused your deafness/hearing loss?

I'm the only one in the family who is deaf, The nerves in my ears started to die when I was 2 years old. By the time I was 12 years I was totally deaf. No one knows why this happened but being deaf has never worried me. :D

I was born hard of hearing and the doctor said that I have sensouri neural hearing loss - basically my nerve in both ears stopped growing. I just became severely to profoundly deaf several years ago and who knows why. :dunno: I'm the only one deaf in my family.

:ily:

mine is mystery. Cannot tell if I born or cause by bad illness or else. I know no true about me.

But, it turn out that I am doing okay being deaf. :D

I know I have mentioned this in another thread -- but didn't go into detail. I was born deaf, but my parents didn't know about it until a routine hearing test was done on me when I was 18 months old. My grandfather (Mum's father) didn't accept it at first, denied it and insisted that I could hear. He 'proved' it by yelling my name out and stomping his feet right behind me! Of course, I turned in reaction to the vibrations of his stomping, . I thought that was hysterical when my mother told me about it.
Once my sister was born 18 months later, parents had her hearing tested right after birth and discovered she was deaf, too. We all don't really know the real reason behind our deafness, but we do suspect it being recessive genes. Something between my mother and father's genes that caused my sister's and my deafness.
I wasn't a very happy girl growing up. I was one angry and frustrated girl -- didn't like being deaf and not understanding what was going on around me at family gatherings and the sorts. But now I've grown up to accept the fact that I'm Deaf and I'm rather proud of it. :D

got spinial menigits when i was 2 years old, start losing hearing till 11 yrs old become completely deaf.

stabbed in the ear with a q-tip by a spiteful nanny. i wish i was kidding. :(

My mum realised something was wrong with me (not healthwise) as she hoovered in my room while I was sleeping and I didn't even wake up screaming at all cos the vacuum was loud. So, she took me to an audiologist for a hearing test and it was confirmed I was deaf. Officially discovered my deafness at age 18 months old.
My grandfather (Mum's dad) refused to accept the fact I was deaf and tried to 'prove' Mum that I was hearing by yelling my name out and STOMPING his feet on the floor behind me! Of course, I reacted to the vibrations from his stomping on the floor!!

DOUBLE oops...I must have short term memory problems or getting amnesia as I realised I had already posted in here...holy crapola!

Shut up, java...!! I know you're gonna laugh yer arse off on this! :P pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffhhhhhhhhhhhh

I'm HOH from 20db in the low sounds to 120db in high sounds. I was caught in the kindergarten screening. My mom was late deafened with her hearing starting to go when she was in her early 20's to profound by her late 30's. We assume that it is probably genetic but we haven't had our history mapped out.

mom says that i was fine until i was 9 months old... mom suspected it was one of those shots that babies got back then....

Hehe that's funny. My mum contracted German measles (Rubella) and found out I was deaf later. The doctor first said I was hearing, then they took me to so many different doctors until one finally confirmed I was deaf. My mum then started a program to make migrant women more aware of Rubella and the effects it can have on babies. I'm lucky to be only deaf and not brain damaged or any of the other effects.

Born deaf. I have a couple of people in my family who are deaf as well but they became deaf from being ill with the german measles.

I became deaf at the age of 5.. I had a history of alot of ear infections and fever when i was a baby.. and it blew out my nereve in both of my ears...We were very poor when we were babies. so my parents didnt have medicare coveraged....

Born profoundly deaf because my mother had Rubella, and I am the only odd in my family! My Mother suspect I am deaf as I am third child, but the doctor told her not to worry too much as he thought I was the lazy baby, and Mum wasn't satisfied with his response, and went to see the 3rd doctor and confirm my deafness when I was six weeks old baby!!

Umm, I am mother of three hearing daughters, and I must add that my second daughter failed at audiologist test when she was 8 months old baby and didn't response to the noise they were making, it baffled me because the other day she was ok and I suspect she had ear infection, but the Audiogist was thinking different and said she is deaf because I pass it on her, I disagreed with her, so I got my husband with me the next appointment to confirm that she is not deaf, on our arrival, she told my hearing husband she is positive that my daughter is deaf, but I am happy to say she pass it with flying colors. She is full hearing now and still has ear infections from time to time, which is rarer as the years go by.

My Adopt parents were supsect about me when I walks closer to Train Track.. Really damn LOUD.. But I kept walking.. My parent stunned and surprised.. worried about me... decide to take me to see specialist doctor.. Found the results.. She is Deaf.. My parent decide send me to Oral School in Toronto,Ontario. I have health record says.. "Normal Ears" (hmmm) that puzzled me.. but I believe myself.. I'm born DEAF..

Lost hearing at the age of 5 to meningitis. I am an extremely unusual case, though—I only lost hearing in one ear. One ear is profoundly deaf and the other has almost normal hearing. This is clinically extremely rare. The doctors who examined me after my recovery wanted to publish my case. Although almost all hearing people would consider me very fortunate, in recent years I’ve come to realize that it wouldn’t make an iota of difference to me if I were partially or completely deaf. I’ve actually come to be somewhat proud of the fact that I at least partially share something in common with Deaf people.

Yes, I do remmy the specialist at RIT campus during SVP '92. He checked it out inside both of my ears. he said my ears looks fine. also said both drums inside my ears are healthy. I do believe my nerves are damaged by my mother's rubella during preggy time.
I reckon that drums and etc inside both of ur ears look normal to specialists/doctors.
Some Deafies become deaf by various reason like drum damage, etc..

according to my family, i was born hearing; however, when i was very young i had a prolonged illness that included having a very high temperature for an extended time. my family did not realize that i had become hard of hearing until an observant teacher suggested to my family that i have my hearing tested. literally, my parents, particularly my father, thought i was the village idiot. i was taught how to speechread by a very good speech therapist, and that is how i began to thrive in the hearing world. i learned asl after i left home.

I was born hearing, and am the only one deaf in my family. I was 4 years old and went to France with my grandmother to visit my relatives, and became sick with bad case of bronchitis, so my grandmother took me to a french doctor who gave me a shot of amoxicillin but gave me too much of it. I got better while still at France and went back home. I must have became deaf when that doctor gave me the anitbiotic (I was allergic to it after getting an overdose of it) or slowly lost my hearing during the stay in France with my grandmother and at home. After I got home from France, about a week and half later I was watching cartoons on tv and I had turned the tv volume all the way up.. my grandfather was puzzled why I had done that and came up to me.. said why did I put it up too loud..I said it was broken and wanted to hear. My grandfather was confused and thought something was not right..he told me he did call my name but I didn't turn my head to respond back. My grandparents took me to University of Virginia Hospital in Audiology and found out I was profoundly deaf. My grandfather told me that since I lost my hearing I was upset I could not hear anything and was crying but later got used to it. I was still able to communicate to my grandparents verbally so he made sure I didn't lose that and had me enroll in a mainstreamed elementary school with cued speech so I grew up with Cued Speech and oral :) I knew ASL when I went to Kendall (KDES) in Washington, D.C. but was only there for a month then transferred to that mainstreamed school. I learned ASL again during High School.
