Fast Food Resturant Drive-Thru

How did they goof up?

1) I went to the restaurant and signaled to a worker I want to get in and I'm deaf. She signaled to me to drive up to the drive through. The dining area seemed to have closed 8 minutes earlier than the 10 pm time posted on the door.

2) I drove up to the drive thru window bypassing the menu and asking for paper and pen and I wrote my order for 2 soft tacos and an encherito. While I was writing the order a man in there got impatient and started yelling at me while pointing to the cars behind me. I signaled I was deaf to him and he pointed to a sign below the window says "no walk-up orders". I pointed to my van and then I signaled to him I cant talk on the microphone at the menu sign and a lady who worked there grabbed the sheet I wrote my order on and signaled me to take another lap and gave me gestres that appeared that they would have the order ready by the time I arived on the window again.

3) I made the lap and it was like #2 all over again and that lady was no where to be found on the premisis and after trying again I decided to quit and I wrote on a piece of paper "my lawyer will call you" and drove off.

I already wrote my attorney about this experience and it'll be 9 months from now till the taco bell $tork delivers me a $4,000 baby.

Jack in the box, my girls's father drove through she took his order and asked to move forward he refused she called cop and came same asking him to move forward he refused cop gave him card to call headquarter of Jack in the box, that is all? he didnt get order :aw: he got home and yelled bad cops here :/

Nesmuth, he should have done the same u did leaving note lawyer will call u* Cool! Good luck! :)

I do drive through many times, write down some order where hearing speaking to order that box then drive forward to window hand them my paper if she said about amount i would ask them write pls sometimes they have pen in their pocket, mostly not they have to run looking for pen, sometimes asked me to move forward and wait I took polite :aw:

 I have used drive thru many times since children was born(10 years). I just go straight to the window and let them know that I am deaf and I cannot hear anything. Of course, I prewrite the orders on what we want to eat and hand them a note. They just ring up the price and do it right there.. No problem.. I have not gotten any hard time from those people just yet. Now my children are old enough, I just stop by speaker and let them speak on what they wanted to order since they really wanted to do this. They think its more fun that way for some reason.. :D

Once, I went in Drive-Thru at Burger King, it got long line, I dont care because I have a right same like another people do stop by Drive-Thru. I finally stopped by the window and showed my paper to that man and he said NO, wont take my order because too long line and I was like, Im deaf! And he said no no no, wont take my order then I decided to stay, wont MOVE at all. That man is manager of that Burger King. I dont care until his boss finally show up and I said Im deaf to that man then he yelled at that man horrible until said YOU ARE FIRED! and that manger gulped and that boss man gave me FREE food, everything... I was like whoa, thanks then leaving...

I got the guts to being that way to any resturant if they dont respect me for being deaf ;)
You did the right thing! More people need to realize that the customer NEEDS to complain about things like this. It seems deafies are more educated about this, though, so am I preaching to the choir? ;) Seriously, though, it is the consumer's duty to complain if they're not being served correctly.

Good going! :thumb: This is ridiculous. The Taco Bell in Waukesha, WI does have a very friendly manager, even to deaf people, but since Taco Bell is a franchise, it can be totally different at each location.

By the way, does your lawyer sign or do you write notes to each other (or do you use a 'terp)? (I'm just curious....)

Oh Yeah. I Do That Manyyy Time.. They Would Always Mess Up The Order!( The Other People Who Were Behind Me) Oopsss Hehe But Hey We Haave A Right Too! Pftt. Dont Worry! Worry About Yourself! :)

Richard, First you said you were drove up..then you said he pointed to a sign that said no walk up orders and you pointed to your van. Were you driving or were you on foot? If you were walking, did you wait your turn in line or walk in front of the other cars that were there?

I've order myself and it wasn't hard, here in NC there is a screen that places your orders to make sure it's correct... it's simple.... but most of the time I order inside since it's easier for me to "make" the person understand me... I speak clearly most of the time, a lot of trouble saying my s's most of the time..... but I'm not going to back down if a person doesn't understand.... I will def stand up for myself... hope everyone does the same! :)

Excellent caught that one!

I am sure that the stupid employee pointed "No Walk-Up Order" that he thought it is just a piece of paper instead of speaking....

Hi. I really enjoyed reading the entire thread and I felt very happy and read funny posts about their experiences with being a deaf and had to drive through.

What I'd love to see is a touch screen, with a camera built-in. So if someone walks up to a touch-screen and not driving a car, the employee can detect the man/woman walking, and they will say "Sorry, this is for drive-through only." Then, they will disable the controls so a walk-in person can't use it. If a camera detected a vehicle, then they will enable the touch-screen to take their orders.

Thus, I think that a legislature should pass a bill, requiring every fast-food restruants to replace the speaker box with a touch-screen with a built-in camera. But I understand if it's going to be that expensive, but at least the legislature should pass the bill. But that would mean, higher taxes for everyone, which I doult anyone would be able to afford higher taxes.. :p

Hmmm...something we have to think about...

Employees/Managers who don't treat deaf customers is like saying that all deaf people and hearing people are treated inequally. Deaf people should have the same rights as hearing people, and I, as a hearing impaired, visual impaired, and speech impaired person, 100% respect the deaf community.

I am an attorney with a firm which is representing a man in Westborough, Massachusetts who is suing Wendy's because their drive thru windwos are not accessible to the deaf/hard of hearing/speech impaired customers. We think what happened to our client may have happened to others in the deaf/harod of hearing/speech impaired comunity around the country, so we are trying to make this lawsuit into a class action. We are looking for witnesses to Wendy's service of the deaf/hard of hearing/speech impaired at their drive thru windows. If you have had difficulties obtaining service at a Wendy's drive thru window because of your hearing/speech impairment, please contact Rebecca Pontikes at Pyle, Rome, Lichten, Ehrenberg & Liss-Riordan at rpontikes@prle.com. I am also happy to take relay calls: 617-367-7200.

The deaf man is not only one that Wendy Restaurant drive in discriminationed against

One of my major concerns about more and more
fast-food chains have been hiring more Spanish-speaking
people !!! Plus, they can NOT even read English
making things more difficult for deafies to
communicate with these Spanish employees.

I'm a good lip-reader myself, but I can NOT lipread
these Spanish people at all.
I asked them to write something down,
but they refused to write anything only
because they do NOT read/write English.

There is no win-win situation here.
I agree with you I notice they hire spanish mexcian worker which they dont understand and they should not be serving drive thru

the other day my ex and i went to a mcdonald's (that we don't frequent) and at the box where you put your verbal orders (whatever it's called), there was a tiny sign that said "customers with hearing disablities and soeech disablities, please pull up to the window". that made me smile- because it shows that they're willing to accomodate.

maybe you guys should start writing to your local fast food restaurants and ask for the same thing?
