Austine School Facing Hard Times (Vt School for the Deaf)

BRATTLEBORO -- Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing President Bill Gurney knows there is a future for the organization, but at this point he just doesn't know exactly what it is. Advancements in medicine and technology, changes in education law, soaring fuel costs and a stubborn...

All those cities on the "Deaf friendly" list have Deaf schools in them, I believe. I live in Columbus and I know there is a big deaf population here.

    Should Homework Be Banned?

I am a teacher myself and I have the opinion that homework is very important and vital. Responsibility is something all students need to learn, and homework helps with that skill. It also helps to reinforce what they learned that day, and helps the teacher know what the child is learning in and...

Is Anyone Presently Studying ASL online at LifePrint.com?

Yeah, being around actual Deaf people is powerful. I used to think I could learn it all by myself :giggle: ..... but once I started being around Deaf people and interpreters, my signing skill went up ten fold.

wind storms, power outages, rain in ohio

I live in Columbus, OH and we got hit badly too. I was -driving- at the time it first hit -eyeroll-... trees were breaking all around me. It was insane. Cars were swaying back and forth. I got home and looked like I had taken a full blown shower by the time I got inside. Trees all over the...

Official AllDeaf Switched At Birth Discussion [tv show on abc family]

I am so mad at Emmett for making such a poor decision at the end! I loved how Daphne opened up to John about deaf community and deaf culture. That was wonderful :) I didn't know you couldn't win a basketball game on a free throw.. then again I know nothing about basketball. I love how they...

    Top Deaf Schools?

I think a lot of judgment being passed onto deaf schools here are based on individual experiences, which may have been positive or negative because of a certain staff member etc.. there are reasons for rules, reasons for discipline... anyway, i'm not a big fan of "ranking"... all deaf...

    Kent State University

Well, I went to Kent and it was a good school. Good environment, great campus. There isn't much to do OFF campus-- if you step foot off of the campus it becomes well, pretty much nothing. I know that they have been renovating the town since I've been there-- it's been about five years. As far as...

    Goldberg suffering from 'hearing loss'

good for Whoopi to advertise the need for awareness... it is a twofold benefit because she is role modeling for those who are older and too afraid or ashamed to get hearing aids...

Do States Need Schools for the Deaf?

State schools follow the curriculum-- correct me if I'm wrong. The four states that I know about (Ohio, Florida, New York, Kentucky) all follow their state standards-- they are expected to teach what's on that grade level to their students, even if the students are not on grade level yet.

    Facebook bans teacher&student for friends

I think it is a good law to enact.. it's a little unclear, though. Teachers have no reason to be 'friends' with their students on social networking sites... as for parent-teacher, that's different-- though I'd wait until after the school year was over.

    cochlear implant testimony

I was one of those kids who didn't want to learn sign when I was younger-- then again, I was not exposed to sign as these kids in the self contained classrooms are. They see it everyday, but they still don't want to sign-- actually, I'd say it's about half and half-- some want to learn but feel...

    cochlear implant testimony

It is my ENT that was booked for three months-- my audiologist has gone above and beyond for me on this issue. I'll ask her about the electrodes thing! As for having the oral kids learn ASL, I'm afraid it isn't that simple-- either their parents don't want them to learn, or they don't want to...

    cochlear implant testimony

Hi all, Actually, when I only wear one, it creates this balance issue-- it feels incredibly imbalanced and it's very strange sensation. I wore my hearing aid to balance out the left ear when I got my right eat implanted-- so I think it makes sense. I'm going to the ENT doctor this week after...
