    Hi, I'm Katie :)

I'll definitely look into the Gally immersion program, thanks! And yeah, I was totally raised in the hearing world. I guess my parents just never thought it was necessary to expose me to the deaf community.

    Hi, I'm Katie :)

I've taken an ASL class a couple of years ago. I plan to take another one this summer, and I have an ASL book that I practice with. When I get good enough, I want to volunteer at the deaf and blind school near me so I can be more exposed to the dwaf community :)

    Mainstreaming

Just wondering who else has went to a mainstream school like me. What were your experiences? I've managed to make mostly A's and a few B's. I feel like I had to teach myself a lot of the time though. There have always been some teachers that I can't hear in class. I just sit there staring at the...

    Carrying around a notepad?

Because I'd be nervous to let someone use my phone to type something to me. I'm just weird about people touching my phone lol

    Why are you deaf?

I'm hard of hearing. I have Turner Syndrome, which caused my ears to be shaped abnormally. That caused chronic ear disease and tons of drainage and ear infections. The infections destroyed the bones in my ear and my eardrum.

    Carrying around a notepad?

So, I get really frustrated sometimes in social situations where I have to talk to people. I tend to feel left out. Do you guys think that carrying around a notepad to write things down would help me join in more? That way if I couldn't hear someone, I could just ask them to write it down rather...

    Whispering

When you are in a really quiet environment and someone tries to whisper to you, how do you explain to them that it won't work? Most of the people I'm around aren't used to being around a hard of hearing person, so they usually just try to whisper louder when I let them know. I'm like "It's just...

    Hi, I'm Katie :)

So, my name is Katie and I'm 18 years old. I have Turner Syndrome. It caused me to have chronic ear disease. The drainage from that has destroyed the bones in my ears as well as my ear drums. I have had several surgeries on my ears including a BAHA implant on my left ear. I should be getting one...

hard of hearing and social skills

As a hard of hearing person who has been in the hearing world my whole life, I definitely say yes! I've always avoided a lot of social situations because my hearing would cause me to do embarrassing things. Not only that, but it's just really tiring and overwhelming to constantly have to try so...

    Any good deaf stories?

Lately my hearing has gotten so bad, that I hate talking on the phone. My grandmother doesn't get that, so this happened... My mom: Guess what you told your grandmother on the phone? Me: *looking alarmed* What? My mom: You told her you had so-and-so's address. Me: Oh, thank God! I was...

    Frustrated

I have the same problem. I get so bored in situations like that! It will help if you bring a friend with you, though.

    Navigating a Hearing World

Usually, my mother just speaks to them for me or I can read their lips. If someone tries to whisper to me in a quiet setting, I just have to be honest with them and they usually write things down for me.

    People Speaking for You

When you are in public talking to people (ordering food, talking to a doctor, etc.), do your parents/friends have a habit of speaking for you? My mother does this a lot, and I know she's just trying to help. I can read lips pretty well though, so it's not necessary a lot of the time. It's pretty...
