Houston Father Shoots Drunk Driver who killed his two sons...

I myself know how the dad felt. Very heartbroken and mad! But it doesn't give him the right to kill. He should have beat him up (not to death) instead so he might get away with it and the driver would be in jail for a long time. That's the problem with owning a gun, when you are out of control, you would want to kill somebody like he did.

HUH?

I disagree. I think owning guns keep you sane... I mean. Think about this one. Did you know that Americans kill more with knives than guns? That is the FBI report... and always have been throughout the history. The difference is, knives kill INDIVIDUAL, and gun killing is either individual (mostly) or mass (rarely).

Um, I think you are brainwashed by media. I personally owned some over twenty guns and rifles myself (I was in a boy scout troop number 1347, look up it up if you want). Didn't bring them with me.

Although Europe is gunless, CR is probably the most least restrictive.

BY THE WAY, when gun control law ever get passed (who knows), good luck with Communist China. Mao himself famously said back in 1950s, "Americans are terrorists because they are gun owners". :hmm:

David is in jail. Why? He murdered the driver with his gun. Don't you think some gun owners can get pissed off and kill someone like the guy who shot at the SUV with his gun that he legally owned (he's also in jail)? So how did that keep him sane? That is not rare. For example, James Holmes, Aurora shooter owned guns legally. Did that keep him sane?

You misunderstand the statistics.

There are MILLIONS of gun owners... not sure, I'd say around at least 40 MILLION...

You do understand this, right? IF you said it's not rare, American population would have been decimated by a million in months.

Maybe you should double check. :hmm:

In order to keep someone sane, the person has to be sane in the first place. Gun ownership can't restore sanity to someone who has already lost it.

I think the number was something like 38% in the South and 30% in the rest of American. I think those numbers are for legal ownership. There are 300 million guns.

Interesting.

This is a bit of headache since I can't tell the number of gun owners from the percentage. Statistics is my worst field in mathematics, but it can be pretty predictive... I think. The book in particular I have in mind, Probably Not, has enforced my thinking.

I did a quick look, here is the result:

Most estimates range between 39% and 50% of US households having at least one gun (that's about 43-55 million households). The estimates for the number of privately owned guns range from 190 million to 300 million. Removed those that skew the stats for their own purposes the best estimates are about 45% or 52 million of American households owning 260 million guns).

Some recent estimates:

A 2011 Gallup poll estimates that 47 percent of US households own a gun.
A 2007 Small Arms Survey estimates there are 88.7 guns per 100 Americans (#1 in the world for guns per capita)
A 2010 estimate from the NRA states "Privately owned firearms in the U.S.: Approaching 300 million, including nearly 100 million handguns. The number of firearms rises over 4 million annually."

Hmm, this is probably outdated by now. 2011.

I think you've misread it. There are more incidents with knives than guns, but they are less fatal.

In a journal study I've read, based on medical expenses of injuries people got by using hospital stats, there were more incidents with patients involved with sharp objects than firearms in the US: (135,690 vs 53,750) but guns were more fatal in injury incidents than sharp objects: (10,840 vs 1,810). The numbers are reduced by a factor of per 100,000 people. Those are assuming incidents from both sexes. If it's just males alone, the discrepancy is a lot higher than females.

On your second statement, there is truth in that. The US also accounted for 80% of deaths involving firearms across first world nations of the globe.

These are the sources I used for the statements above:
Corso, P. S., Mercy, J. A., Simon, T. R., Finkelstein, E. A., & Miller, T. R. (2007). Medical costs and productivity losses due to interpersonal and self-directed violence in the United States. American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 32(6), 474-482.

Richardson, E. G., & Hemenway, D. (2011). Homicide, suicide, and unintentional firearm fatality: comparing the United States with other high-income countries, 2003. The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, 70(1), 238.

I'm lucky that I'm not on jury. I wouldn't want to make this decision.

Yup, same here.

As nature of jury, I have to say guilty based on law and evidence, so no way to use personal to favor.

Well, I don't think that you should worry about poor father that lost 2 sons, so he won't shot you for no reason.

I found legally gun owners are friendly, based on my experience and they have no reason to kill you, unless you put their life in danger.

That's not a fact.

LOL, I assume Foxrac meant ALL legal gun owners are friendly. Is that a fact? Be honest with me please.
I don't make assumptions. If you're not sure what someone posts, you should ask.

He did say, "based on my experience." Since I doubt that his experience includes having met ALL legal owners, then his statement that they are friendly refers only to the ones he has met.

In order to keep someone sane, the person has to be sane in the first place. Gun ownership can't restore sanity to someone who has already lost it.
For example, someone who is sane bought a gun and as Lukin said, owning a gun keeps him/her sane so then what the hell happened to the guy who shot at the SUV that played loud music? What the hell happened to the old guy who killed unarmed teen burglars? What's up with the guy who shot at the neighbor who told his dogs to shut up? All of them were legal gun owners. Why weren't they sane while owning the guns? Can you please tell me that it's true that owning a gun keeps the owner sane all the time? Honestly, that's bullshit.

Since I don't have the background information on these people I have no idea whether or not they were sane at the time they acquired their guns. So that neither proves nor disproves anything.

I'm more concerned about the people who are insane or mentally ill at the time that they get their guns. Not any of the proposed gun control laws would prevent that.
