Deaf Awareness

Knee / hip replacement, cataract surgery: not necessary for a full productive life, but some do it for various reasons.

Those are often necessary for a full productive life because of funtional limitations. A few wrinkles don't create a functional limitation.

anyways,,, back on topic. I think all deaf children should be made aware of Deaf culture not to be shield away from it and taught that it is something undesirable.

You know, it just hit me. I think maybe there is some confusion regarding the difference between cultural affiliation and participation in a support group.

True, quite right

I have several family members who had full productive lives without, despite having medical recommendations to have these surgeries. They are not necessary, like CIs, but some may value them.

Medical recommendation is not always based on functional limitation.

A "productive life" is rather a personal and subjective one because experiences vary.

Yes, but where one might see a functional limitation, another might change their perspective on what functions are desired when faced with the alternative of surgery.

That is called adjustment to disability. You would be surprised how many fail to do that.

Yes :ty: it appears that some people need it spelled out to them :giggle: we could always start on a "Deaf Culture for Dummies"

I think a primer might be a good thing. You probably have a good perspective from which to take this on having discovered Deaf Culture recently, and understanding what it's like to enter as a new language learner without access to a local deaf community, something facing many.

One key element to cover would be first finding the path to Deaf Culture.

I feel so lucky to have found guides and a live and warm welcome from the first moment we discovered my daughter was deaf, making it possible for her to become a part of Deaf Culture as a toddler, learning the language as a native. She'll never be an expat Hearie in the Deaf World :) or have that period of non-acceptance while learning the language, the customs, something I've heard so many talk about here.

But so many here on AD went well into their adult lives before even becoming aware that Deaf Culture existed -- or that it was something they might become part of. I think you've mentioned a few times that you, too, were unaware of Deaf Culture well into your adulthood, even up until a few years ago. Outlining a map for others to follow, a way to reach people like yourself who may have moderate or severe hearing loss and live a compromised existence that isn't true to themselves because they don't yet know themselves as Deaf people might be one approach towards reaching those who could benefit from an understanding of Deaf Culture.

The reason I raised these questions is not for my own benefit, I was born severely deaf so even though introduced 'late' I already had Deaf Culture a part of me.

Inmate 23 - my prior comments re discussion pertinent to Alldeaf.com VS VampireFreaks.com. My comments here were/are not relevant to V F. Personally, never actually met "goths/zombies from V F. Thus seemingly irrelevant to alldeaf.com.
Haven't met the "local deaf" to discuss whether they are goths/zombies either.I have commented before not fluent in ASL/BSL/LSQ et al-either. Haven't decided to hire/secure ASL interpreter to canvas whether the "local deaf" have Goths/Zombies as members. Better things to do!

Jillio: Is this apparently more "non sequitur".? No comment re "travis"interlude.

There are DEAF SKINHEADS who are successful ci users

I wondered if that was off-topic.

I want to go find an interpreter so I can canvas my deaf community to verify whether we have goths/zombies as members (I already know the answer). I don't have better things to do right now. Off to deaf canvassing. May take 6 hours. Maybe 13 if I must stop off at my local library to look it up.
Its NOT off topic Deaf skins/goths/punks are small sub culture

My local library doesn't have books re Zombies/Goths/Skinheads potential infiltration the deaf community. Not much comment in the local Toronto newspapers either.
Is this happening in other deaf communities?
AlleyCat: Would canvassing deaf communities on actual members who are Zombies/Goths/Skinheads- be difficult?

successful ci users

Inmate23: There could be " DEAF successful Cochlear Implant users that are SKINHEADS"

I don't recall seeing any at Sunnybrook/Toronto recent user meeting-about 300 showed up. How many are now part of cultural deaf community here in Toronto-unknown. Goths/punks and skinhead form a "small sub culture".There to?

I don't recall any comments from Goth/SkinHeads Deaf persons in the cults that I belong to. re deaf/Deaf/Blind/deaf persons in Vampire Freaks.Com which did have over a million members.

Yep. Some don't see the need to mimic the hearing to be productive, some do. Oh, well.

What do you mean by "mimic the hearing?" Wear hearing aids? Use CIs?

Am I mimicking the sighted when I put my glasses on in the morning, too?

You have no clue about the history of kokonut's audist attitude toward the deaf. It has nothing to do what you're talking about, but rather everything to do with the man's insidious agendas.
