Cochlear implant surgery is Safe!!

My dear REF74, are you implying that I am a pill popping coward?
No, I don't.
Sorry you interpreted it this way.
If you read it carefully I did not say that all the people scared about surgery get tons of drugs. I only said that I met several people scared about surgery, but completely unaware of the risks of other apparently safer practices, like (ab)using drugs.
I mean I personally met these people, persons I know personally, not simply met here in the forum!!

You seem to liken major surgery to something as simple tooth extraction. The cost of the surgery alone should tell you of its possible consequences if you choose to ignore common sense. The topic, if you recall is not just "surgery by itself".
Absolutely not.
The error here is considering CI as a major surgery. The cost of a real major surgery is obviously of different order of magnitude!!
cochlear implantation is not a tooth extraction, but it is also nothing like a surgery to vital parts of the organism.
Obviously, as always, things I say are personal opinions. Can I have and express them?

"Modern medicine is" is what??
Sorry... begun to write a sentence and changed my mind.

When did anyone mention pills? Are you saying that anyone who does not agree to this surgery is a pill addict?
I did, nobody before me. I mentioned pills simply because it is pretty obvious that surgery is a scaring medical practice, but there are so many potentially risky procedures people often do, without even considering there are associated risks. Taking medicines is one of that. It was simply an example of a very simple thing that in principle can be very risky, much much more than one can expect.
I AM NOT SAYING that if you do not agree you are a pill addict. Where is that written?!?!

"these people..." and to whom in this forum or this particular thread would you be referring? Would that be those who did not agree with your particular argument? What people, Ref?
To nobody of the forum.
As I said above, I was referring to some people I met personally.

I am insulted. As a fact, I have taken offense. That Ref74, is no easy task for anyone to accomplish. I have reared five teenagers who gave their mother, me, every possible slight while growing. I did not find it offensive then, but you have belittled others and me by your offhand and belittling slight and I believe that you have particularly insulted my common sense, the opionion of my team of excellent Doctors, (who are specialists and topped their med school classes) as well as any one else that has differed from your opinion.

Do you often state or validate your point by denegration and insult?

I am sorry you feel insulted. It was not my intention. And I think to be very moderate in my opinions, usually. I do not think my post was not moderate, actually.
Honestly, I think your reaction is a bit exaggerated. Don't know, maybe my English is not good enough... you know English is not my first language...
Anyway, I don't think my post could be interpreted as insulting anybody.
Since it appears to be the case, I apologize, as I said it was not my intention.

With has I cant make out the difference between the words juice or shoes. I just try to follow what I can. I hear some, like deep thunder, deep growls, of all things....bumblebees, the BIG ones... some vowels, few consonants, I do a little better with some things with ALD, but absolutely no phone with that. (I love my netbook) That is, if I dont have any irritation or infection. In that case not much.

oh, gee, that kid video is so disturbing. The parents talk about a lack of communication and the child seems to be signing well, enjoying things. The mom talks about how it was frustrating for the child... duh...that was very, very, well, disturbing.

Even the video stated that it was MAJOR surgery. shiver....

Besides all the risks associated with any surgery, it is extremely wrong to consider surgery a big risk by itself. Modern medicine is
Many people are scared about the simplest of the surgery (and CI nowaday is pretty simple), but get tons of pills of any kind... The risk they are facing is far worse than a surgery. I've met a lot of these people...

From an outsiders POV, I have read the posts and replies and all I can say is WOW!!! You not only missed the point but twisted the comments into a personal attack against you. People never cease to amaze me.

Can I ask who you are referring to?

Surgery is always a risk. Why do you think that the dr and hospital require you to sign a form that says you are aware that you could die? Anaesthesia has risks. IMHO, The anasthesialogist is the most important person in the OR. Each procedure has risks. Blood clotting risks. Secondary infection risks. Resistant hospital infections are risks. Certain individuals have medical conditions that have risks associated with surgery.

A risk may be small but when it happens to you that doesn't matter. It sucks to be that one person who suffers.

We all weigh the benefits and risks and make the decision that we believe is the best for us. No one can make that decision for us. We shouldn't judge someone's decision because it's based on their individual case.

I never have problem with anesthesia. I was fine when I woke up. Just dizzy. That's rare for people have problem with anesthesia during in operation. The people are different individual. The patient must info to anesthesia about the history.

If you want to advocate to deaf people for CI, why are there no captions?

I have no idea what these people are saying!! :hmm:

yea i dont bother to watch them when it have no captions. I d like to know what these people are talking about.

Me too! I think YouTube must have all CC available. I am sick of not have CC on it. GRRRR!

I don't have a problem with YouTube not having closed captioning since most of it are user-content, and most Deaf people don't even subtitle or closed caption their own videos. However it is rude to keep posting audio-based clips and videos on a deaf forum with no transcripts or closed captioning.

ref74, your point seemed crystal clear to me. But then I pride myself in being as objective as possible.

Sorry, I am refering to Nan_Mathews

That is what I thought, and I have to agree.

Thanks, for a while I was thinking not to be able to communicate clearly anymore...

even with CI, I still need closed captioning. and no, I'm not depended on it. I just still can't make out the words by itself.

That's true! I can understand deaf people with asl on vlog. They are lazy to set the subtitle on their own videos. I agree it's rude. That's same as hearing don't set the subtitle on their own videos. Ohh well.

True but this is all deaf, means for deaf people. I notice lots of people who lose their hearing late and willing to learn ASL. It is a good place for them to learn ASL. There are plenty plenty plenty of audio of clips or vidoes outside of the alldeaf, anywhere. But i understand.

Okay, I personally had enough of reading all of the comments about "surgery is... or surgery isn't..." You don't know because you don't work in surgery, but I do because I am an OR RN AND I AM DEAF. I will tell everyone that ALL surgery has risks and potential complications because, and this is important people, BECAUSE each one of us reacts to surgery, anesthesia, medication, etc.... differently! There have never been two patients of mine who reacted the exact way after the exact surgery. However, for all those who fear surgery...there are mandated rules , regulations, and protocol that are required by law and ethics that the circulators, scrub persons, anesthesia people and surgeons must do to minimize the risks of surgery....that is why many (not all, but many) surgeries ARE SAFE. It is because of the actions of the OR team that many surgeries are considered "simple", although I can speak firsthand having been involved in CI surgery as an RN, none are so "simple" -if that were true, there would be no need to have medications, crash carts, and other emergency items made available in case they were to occur. Okay? So all surgeries have risks but are not simple because everyone is different and reacts differently, but because of the skill, knowledge, and emergency items made available to the OR team( just in case).... this makes many surgeries succesful. Okay? Can we move onto a different subject now please? And one final note: It IS very rude and ignorant for any videos for deaf NOT to have CC!
