You have to pay for the damages to the other car? Were you driving without any insurance? :(

yes he mentioned that his car has no insurance :(

he is properly screwed

He either was paying attention to a gorgeous sheila off the road, or he had one big incursion with a kangaroo! :giggle:

Ouch reminds me 18 years ago I rear ended a deaf guy's Toyota with my old Toyota cuz I was looking at some girls riding in a Cavalier for a second and bam! I ended up with a messed up nose and the guy's truck was none worse for the wear.

I had to get a new nose piece for the Toyota at the junkyard and installed it myself. The gray color really clashed with the rest of the car being yellow.

I wonder what's the law in australia for driving without car insurance as of course it's illegal to drive without car insurance here in the US and they will give you a huge fine for that and possiblity revoke your license for a few months, I think.

Well, I thought 3rd party insurance is compulsory in Australia. I am not sure if the term exist in the US. Basically, 3rd party insurance covers you if you are at fault. So, in Jake's case under 3rd party insurance, he'd have to pay for the damages to his car while the insurance company pay for the damages to the other car.

Insurance is not cheap, especially for young and inexperienced drivers, but it may pay itself off if/when you have to make a claim. And, it reduces the stress and worries, etc.

Limited Liability Coverage, I believe.

I am not insured, because it expired last march, and I didn't pay for the renew - stupid, I know. What would happen, is that I might possibly have to pay the insurance excess + the damages caused. If that is too much like $3500 or 4,000 in total, then the additional costs to fix my own car wont be worth it. At the least, the car I am driving is 11 years old.

Toyota Corolla, Matrix or something? Ford Focus? Ford Fiesta (new version) etc?
Toyota Corolla
Ford Fiesta (2009 model)
Ford Falcon (2003 - 2006)
Who knows?

Oh my dear but I´m really glad that you are okay, Jake.

Uninsured... Oh my dear!!! :(

Is it legal to drive without use car insurance in Australia?

I consider how much annual or semi-annual payment is auto insurance of your car? If high insurance is for younger driver till age 25, you can use liability insurance for other drivers only. Do not buy new car now until you will be 25.

If you are under the age of 25, the insurance rate will mostly likely be high. I think that you may buy used car or regular sedan or simple vehicle is cheaper in price for insurance then a sports vehicle or sports utility vehicle when you will be age 25. If you are under the age of 25, the insurance rate will mostly likely be high.

Yes, it´s high vehicle insurance for teenagers up to 5 years from 17 years old. If they are the responsible for cause accident up to 3 times within 5 years then they have to go back to driving school. It means that it´s very high for teenagers to burde the costs... plus double high insurance... in Germany... Germany is stricter about vehicle law.

Yes, I am wondering the same...

It is illegal to drive without vehicle insurance here in Germany and EU countries.

Yes I know what you mean about 3rd party insurance cover but it´s very high cost for the starters.. (teenagers up to 5 years).

Sucks to hear that, mate. Time for you to buy a motorcycle? Cheaper than cars, aye?

Hm, hatchbacks are excellent for space. Try going for models between 1998-2006 to keep the tab reasonable and most of all, review the safety + reliability ratings of the cars you're interested in.

I wish you the best of luck in the future.

Btw, the mini cooper is my #1 all time favorite car. I drool every single time I see them on the road. :D

Yeah but I don't have a motorcycle licence. So I'd rather get a new car instead spending a penny on these damages on my car.

I always not need to pay for rental coverage insurance if renting a car. My own auto insurance will cover property damage & liability for it. Should I purchase rental coverage insurance if traveling in an overseas area?

JClarke

It is not worth for you to pay more money on the insurance because your car's value is worthless. It's 11 years old. You did the right thing to save your money. I know it is sad, but that's life that we are paying our own car.

I do not know what would happen if you get a rental car when traveling oversea without the insurance because you lost your car and your insurance policy is stopped automatically. Most insurance companies don't care about people... (even for a home insurance because I was a house insurance inspector.)
