Why adults choose CI's for their children

1. Child was unilaterally implanted.

2. Child was implanted when she was a year old.

3. Parents signed with the child upon learning that she was deaf; early infancy. BUt did they know sign from before?

4. I can't answer this as I don't know. To be fair, I'm not going to speculate.


Regardless, I find it absolutely a shame that a parent will not learn sign for their child simply because it's "hard". That's a cop out; an absolute cop out.

I also find it sad that parents don't continue signing with their deaf child, because the child is deaf. What happens when that child is confronted with a signer, but can not sign themselves? This is my point. You'll have a deaf child who cannot converse with a fellow deafie simply for lack of sign. I find that incredibly sad. Incredibly sad.

She can chat with any hearing person that she meets... How much connection would she feel to a deaf person that only knows sign?
Probably about as much connection I would feel to a Dutch person that only speaks Chinese.

So... for a person being bi-lingual is better than uni-lingual....

That's pretty sad for Deaf people speaking only signlanguage, or hearing people speaking only English...

This reminds me of an individual I once observed.

She moved back to the states from living in Japan. She signed up for Spanish class and anytime she took notes in class--it was written in Japanese!

That is what I dont agree with. The dropping of signs.

I don't, either. Even if the child insists on it, it's the parents responsibility to give them both. To perpetuate denial is sad and it's wrong.

If you put a deaf child and a CI child in front of an indivdual that has never meet them before--they are going to notice the Ci child due to the wires protruding from the backs of the ears to the magnet.

Secondly when they see a deaf child signing--first reaction is, " Oh how cute!"



Because you want to include all aspects of communication including sign even if the child insists on speaking/hearing.

You have no idea what it is like to watch a child who COULD hear before lose something SHE valued. How do I explain to her that it would be possibly to give her back some hearing but that I chose not to? SHE misses out on the sounds she used to have. She asks me why her aids are "broken". Yes, I desire that she have RETURNED what she lost. Why is that abuse? Why is it abuse to want to give her the access to sound? I am not denying her ANYTHING!!! I am giving her MORE!

Yes, you are giving her more than what she had. I would love to be able to hear music, the words in the songs, I can only hear musical vibrations, and not the words the song played. I don't think cochlear implant would be the answer for me, I would only think it'll be a waste of time for me, because being 37 years old, and it takes a lot of practice to learn how to hear through the cochlear implant, I think it'll be best when a child is young, and I think she's very lucky that she'll have the access to sounds.

I support you. Don't take it personally. There seems to be a lot of bashing but they all really come from only a handful of people. I was born deaf and my mom chose not to do a CI simply because back then it was new and experimental. However, my mom says that she would have done a CI if I was born NOW, and I agree with her. I actually used to be hardcore against CI once because "why should I have surgery, risk myself, and work extra hard just because society tells me that I'm not normal enough?" However, Ive changed my mind (PM me if you'd like to know why) and am having CI surgery in a few months.

Out of the 2000 interesting persons she meets, 2 are deaf, and 1 of them only uses sign. She won't be able to communicate with that one, but she will be able to communicate with the other 1999.!

I'm sorry but the benefits are not subjective. If the child is able to connect with the sounds around them and make use of those sounds then there is benefit. The happiness of the child is dependent on many other factors other than if they have a CI or not. :roll:
