There have been a lot of avalanche ski accidents recently. Some with fatalities. The Dutch prince is one of the recent snow victims.

Prince still in a critical condition

19-02-2012

It may take as long as the end of the coming week before doctors can give a firm prognosis about prince Johan Friso’s chances of survival after being hit by an avalanche while skiing in Austria on Friday.

The prince’s condition remains stable but he is still in a very criticial condition, the state information service RVD said on Sunday afternoon.

Queen Beatrix visited her second son again on Sunday accompanied by Friso’s wife Mable. They later returned to the hotel in the resort of Lech where the rest of the family is staying.

Coma

Neurologist Michaël Kuiper of the Leeuwarden medical centre told the Telegraaf it is not unusual for patients who have been reanimated to be kept with a low body temperature and in a medically induced coma for some time before being brought round again.

After several days, the temperature is then brought back up to normal and the patient is brought round, he said.

It has since emerged the prince was wearing a helmet when skiing off piste with an old friend from the hotel in Lech. He was under the snow for at least 15 minutes.

3 killed after avalanche near Washington ski resort
Published February 20, 2012 | Associated Press

Well-equipped and familiar with the terrain, about a dozen expert skiers were making their way through a foot-and-a half of fresh snow when an avalanche hit them in an out-of-bounds area near a popular Washington ski resort.

Three men were killed Sunday when they were swept about a quarter-mile down a canyon, and a fourth skier caught up in the slide was saved by a safety device, authorities said. The large group had split into three smaller groups before the avalanche, but all the backcountry skiers were buried to some extent. Those who were able to free themselves rushed to dig out the victims and unsuccessfully performed CPR on the three, believed to be in their 30s and 40s.

"Most of the people involved in this were well-known to the ski community up here, especially to the ski patrol," said Deputy Chris Bedker of the King County Sheriff's search-and-rescue unit. "It was their friends who they recovered."

The Seattle Times reported that two of the victims were Chris Rudolph, the 30-year-old director of marketing for Stevens Pass, and 46-year-old Jim Jack, a judge of competitive free-skiing, where skiers perform tricks and jumps, often in the backcountry.

The Stevens Pass fatalities were part of a deadly Sunday on Washington ski slopes. A male snowboarder was killed in a separate avalanche incident at the Alpental ski area east of Seattle, authorities said.

The men who died on Stevens Pass tumbled approximately 1,500 feet down a chute in the Tunnel Creek Canyon area, King County Sheriff's Sgt. Katie Larson said.

The fourth skier who was swept down the mountain about 80 miles northeast of Seattle was a woman who appeared to avoid a similar fate because of the avalanche safety device she was wearing, Larson said.

ESPN.com identified the survivor as professional skier Elyse Saugstad, who said she used an airbag after the avalanche hit. ESPN Freeskiing editor Megan Michelson was among the skiers and was uninjured, it said.

Michelson said the initial slide was about 30 feet wide and three feet deep, but quickly grew as it swept away Saugstad and the three victims.

Saugstad said she immediately deployed the airbag from her backpack, crediting it with saving her life.

"I was completely buried except for my head and hands" after coming to a rest, she said.

Two of the victims were found nearby, while the third was carried "several hundred feet" farther down the mountain, Saugstad said.

Michelson said the remaining skiers called for help and skied the length of the avalanche track looking for victims, Michelson said.

"The debris pile at the bottom was massive," Michelson said.

Initial reports of the avalanche reached the sheriff's office just after noon, and for some time it wasn't clear whether the other skiers had also been swept up in the slide.

...Experts have said the risk of additional slides in the region could remain high all season. They attribute the dangers in part to a weak base layer of snow caused by a dry winter.

Avalanche deaths are more common in the backcountry than at ski resorts. Out of about 900 avalanche deaths nationwide since the winter of 1950-51, 32 were within terrain that was open for riding at ski resorts, according to the Utah Avalanche Center.
3 Killed After Avalanche Near Washington Ski Resort | Fox News

Avalanche's are the most terrifying to me, along with Tsumnai's....No where to run or hide....and a wonder some people do survive them! Oh Lord!...I'd have a heart attack if either one were coming towards me, (and probably be better off for it!). An "instant" death is much better, than the anticipating when the disaster is gonna hit you, with no where to run.

I can imagine if Prince woke up and found that SteveMcGarrett put him in the likes of Jackass crew... he'd have his servant to remove his white glove and slap his face.

If you want to ski do it properly. Just like driving a car. You drive properly. If you think driving a car fast is cool then youre stupid than i thought. Not even Johnny Knoxville would be stupid enough to get a hot rod go 200MPH on a California freeway.

I think theyre should be speed signs at ski resports like going at a proper ski speed. Have cops hiding in woods with radar guns if youre speeding thats an $200 ticket.

and also - I think WWF (and wrestling) should be outlawed because it's a pure violence. How is it entertaining to see people doing ugly things to each other for entertainment purpose? It's disgusting and it's worse than Jackass show.

That's why they should use the backpack air bags and signalling beacons.

I think hunting should be illegal. No Killing Deer,Rabbits or any wild game. Cause Dick Cheney shot his friend on hunting trip. And the Sheriff Dept was too chicken to arrest the Vice President on attempted murder charges. But any ordinary person shoots someone on hunting trip gets arrested.

Double Standard by Police? I suggest yall watch movie "Murder at 1600" Its about the President of the United States charged with Murder but Secret Service wont allow cops to arrest the president.
