I don't know if this has been asked before.
I noticed there is a HUGE percentage of hearing members on this forum, and there's in many posts a perpetuous asking about one's hearing status; many chose to clarify about them being Deaf/HoH/Hearing in their signature.
I was asking myself, why is the "Join date" relevant but isn't there a "Hearing status" line where one can briefly tell about that if he wants?
Thank you for reading. :)

Well, if they chose to, they could become a Premium member and put it there. You see, members can only do so much with their signature here. Being a Premium member does offer more options, but not everyone is able to do it for various reasons.

Yes you can change the line under your user name but I think what he was getting at was there there could be another line in the post bit UNDER the picture such as:

Join Date
Location
Hearing Status

This way EVERYONE can have the ability to state hearing/deaf/HOH instead or with the signature since many people have turned off viewing signatures.
(IMO swap out one of the likes line lol)

I don't know if it is possible to mod edit that part to customize it (would think you can) but that would be interesting.

The only thing that's changeable is the location. Everything else is up to Alex. He has control of what to do with the forum, and he can make any changes he wants. Not sure if the mods have the same privileges as he does, though.

Yes I know that.

I was SUGGESTING that there could be an additional line to edit. I already know that the only thing editable is the location for a REGULAR member and that for a PREMIUM member that the tag line (under user name) is editable in addition to the location bit.

As for Mods- depends on what level they are in how much ability they have with editing/changing anything forum wise.

 I am fond of the lyrics to that song! And I think the verse "I thought I heard them" is quite illuminative... :cool2:

That's exactly what I meant. :cool2:

What about members who are not interested to disclose their hearing status?

The reason why alldeaf has posts archived from over a decade ago is because of the lack of modifications and external add-ons that aren't from the natural build release of vbulletin. We are still on a 3.x release (nearing 10 years) with no plans for upgrading. Each modification has a chance to corrupt data should anything happen; it has, AD lost some post data before. Thus, these customizations need to be weighted to determine if it's worth the change.

Alex has added a minor modifications, as the forum isn't completely vanilla.

Ooops! Sorry about that... I'm used to seeing the gender marker on the other vBulletin forum I am on LOL.

Understandable- I know that the other forum stuck with the same build for about 10...ish years (it's now been about 13-14 years in existence in various forms). They're on 3.8.6 now and a few modifications/add-ins. Definitely know about the corruption of data from many sources-- DDoS, malware, dingdong kids trying to spam the forum with porn (some of the fastest banning in history lol) and so on.

Thanks for the suggestion, napolicapitale.

Since the beginning of AD, I have had many emails from hearing people asking me if it's OK to join if they're hearing. I always told them they're more than welcome to join.

I honestly don't think having a hearing status option won't do much, and I can see many not wanting to reveal that they're hearing due to the reason mentioned above.

Re what I have added bold to. Then just don't fill it in if you don't want to. I have never added an entry to location even though you can.

In my opinion, hearing status becomes an issue under certain
circumstances, in certain threads which most notably pertain to
deafness, culture and social interactions. When discussing deafness,
members seem to want to use a person's hearing status to either
support or deny an opinion. For example, some members feel a late
deafened person cannot adequately understand what it is like to grow
up deaf. Such is often the case when a hearing parent is making
decisions for a deaf child, or when a late deafened person is
discussing mainstream schooling. It also comes into play when
discussing culture and what is the, "actual" definition of deafness.
There have been cases were members, without looking at another
member's about me section will form an opinion about that member's hearing status based on posts. I have actually had a member, who did not understand that I am deaf, tell me I'm a person of privilege because of my writing style. Probably nowhere else is hearing identity more misunderstood than in posts were members are looking for companionship. I think a lot of people come to all deaf looking for members like themselves, including friends and family of deaf. The diversity of Alldeaf and the name Alldeaf contrast the actual membership of the site.

Having said that, I think the about me section should probably include a hearing status item if hearing members are intimidated about their status. (The larger problem is the intimidation itself which cannot easily be addressed)

I do think that knowing a bit about a person can put their opinions in perspective. That's why I added my sig. I also think that reducing it to a narrow catagory pushes people to form opinions about others without knowing them.

Also for me personaly (maybe other situations?) it might be confusing to others because I would put hearing even though I can relate and have often experienced life as hoh.
