Do you feel the issues and experiences discussed in the video reflect something similar that all deaf experience... or do you think it is something unique to Deaf... or something completely different?

I enjoyed watching this video. I had seen it before but liked watching it again. It warms the heart to see the global Deaf community that is open to those that want to be a part of it. It is sad the shared forced oral experience. It was great to see Joanne's mother recognize that it has made her whole and is supportive.

I watched it previously with subtitles. It was cool that my BSL has improved to a point where I don't need them any more.

Since I am not Deaf, not even 'deaf' I have no slightest idea. I can only suppose, guess or imagine certain things so yes,
I do feel the film reflects some of the issues and experiences the Deaf worldwide encounter.
No, it is neither unique to nor completely different from the Deaf.
Every human group, every society (or more exact - a "sub-society") struggle with feelings of not belonging, being ostracized, mis-understood
or entirely not understood, bullied, abused and as a result of all that feeling only a "half-person".
So, in that aspect all of us can commiserate and sympathize (also empathize) regardless of a root of the feelings.

Thank you for answering :) but would a hearing person face similar issues such as the pool incident?
Yes bullying is not just one group's unique issue... and while I understand you are not d/Deaf... I am curious of other people's perceptions and thoughts...

yes, for example a homosexual could, an autistic could, Tourette's syndrome person could - even from the teacher.
maybe not because on the grounds for not hearing an instructions, but for the fact of being "dirty homo", 'stupid autie'
or "he does that on purpose".
This could be enough excuse for being treated differently and, like Emily persecuted for wrong reason, really.

Fuzzy

Do not think anyone does... I am not asking fuzzy these questions due to not being d/Deaf... I am just curious person all around...

I am Hoh. from medical POV I am totally deaf, hence recommendation for CI, only I hardly ever participated in Deaf community.
I grew up totally in hearing environment.
But I do feel deaf in many ways, Deaf even, since I can hear big fat zit (w/o HAs)
and many, many experiences I read about here are simply.... my own! :)

did i ever state she should be stopped form discussing on here?
no i didnt nor would i
what i do state is
when your not part of a minority culture and people and you happen to be on a minority cultures or peoples board (any, native, black, jewish, Deaf ect ect ect)

then beign polite means knowing your place and knowing your boundaries..

i can as an example go on a women's board someplace, and on that board post about women this and women that, so on so forth, but there will come a time in that discussion when the fact that im not a women will be brought to the front of it...

that doesn't mean i cant state my views, it just means me not being a woman may have a limit to my experience as a women and what women go and have went through..
in this world.

thats called boundaries

and they need to be respected

That is a good thinking, but also it's worth to point out how you too, while on the women's board may learn things
you have no idea about nor capacity to understand, or experience, simply for the fact you have no vagina (eek! or do you? :cool2:)
since you ekhm probably you don't, you may not fully "get it", from women's side, either.

A point for you worth musing over.

Forgive my confusion... but which is it?

What to be confused about? you know what "even" mean, do you?
But for the sake of clarity - I mean "both". Both as in 'deaf' and 'Deaf'. Oh, yes, imagine that. like it or not. (probably not :) )

My opinion of the video. I am genuinely happy for these people. Am I inspired to learn sign and lose my wires? Do I suddenly feel that sign will set me free? No. Do I feel I need something to make me fit somewhere, completing my identity? No. For me, personally, hearing (or not hearing) is something I DO, not something I AM.

I have a vastly different experience than the people in the video. We all have different backgrounds and hearing backgrounds, all of journeys are going to be different. There's no right or wrong answer here. We all take different paths seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because someone isn't on your path doesn't mean they gotten lost.

I didn't start off deaf and I didn't suddenly become deaf. It was a real slow slide into it, and it started at different times for my two ears.

Because of that I can someone what it's like to have single sided deafness. What it's like to be deaf in one ear and have mild-severe loss in the other, and have profound loss in one and severe in the other, to be profound in both, and to have no response whatsoever in both. I can tell someone the differences in using hearing aids with a severe loss versus a profound one.

Because of that experience I can say none of the people in that video should have had to "find" sign as an adult or teen. So I am very very happy that they have. Every child with a severe loss, and certainly worse, but even just severe, should have sign language, whether they're being main streamed or not.

Since I am not Deaf, not even 'deaf'

My grasp of the American English language is very firm...
But I do question if you understand the differences between deaf and Deaf... if so, how do you rationalize saying you are both?

Your job as Greek chorus was entertaining for awhile, but now even Hoichi is getting impatient with you.

And if you want to pick on Fuzzy, why asking her to rationalize something you mispercive she said?

Interesting...
Picking on her... ah, no... one says they are not something not even a little something then later claims to be both of it... well forgive someone for being confused... I am not picking on her, even a little

a/And yet you couldn't understand what I mean.. whatever.

b/Yes of course I do understand, otherwise why would I bother to repeat the word, once with a capital letter to boot?
To further calm your qualms - I did read about what it mean to be culturally Deaf, capital letter Deaf, and so on.

c/ may I point out I haven't said "I am"nor "I deserve to" only "I feel". For all the good it does, I may feel like a penguin or a kite, or a Barbie doll
- so what? by definition, "feel, feeling" is state of emotion, or belief, granted to anyone.
But I will answer you, no plm :) - how do I rationalize I am both? well for starters I do am deaf, as in I can't hear.
Even with my HAs I can not hear like a normal hearing person does, I do have serious limitations. Hence, deaf.
Now, reading about the struggles the culturally Deaf has endured and are still enduring - these are very familiar to me personally.
A lot of these struggles I experienced personally. A lot of matters I understand. A lot of matters I support.
Some I don't, but show me a community where everybody down to one single person agree to a "t".
while I do not know ASL, I do know some single simple proper signs. For times when I am out of my HAs I use my own invented
signs -so, in a way I do "sign", too. Hence, Deaf.
Keep in mind, please, I have not said "I am" - only that "I feel".

Thanks, Botts :cuddle: I am okay, though. - it's even a good chance to better show who I am :)

A) yep...
B) education is good for the soul
C) ah... emotions are key here I suppose... for they are the defining feature, yes?

Thank you for answering... but as mentioned before, deaf and Deaf share common struggles so feeling like one or the other would change what? To say you feel neither and both can leave anyone confused as to how you see yourself... at least it did for me, and since we are all unique individuals we are all permitted own own views...
