I do not know where to put this question so I put here in general. My son's girlfriend is taking child development class and she asked me this question about non-speaking child, how many words do they know before they reach at age of 6. Speaking child should know about 1400 words. There is variety in our deaf culture, doda may know more words than doha. From my own experince, I believed I only learned few words before I reached 6 thank to oral program. Today is not same as my time and I believe the deaf children are doing more and much better than I was doing back in 60's.

Any information will help me and pass this information to her. :)

Umm... interestin' post you got. I have no clue how this work for non-speakin' child.
When I was a child, I learned how to talk with the help of hearin' aids through the speech therapist at St. Joseph School for the Deaf in New York City. This was back in 1960's...

Let's found out what other AD members have to say about this issue you have. :)

I would say that a non-speaking child... varies. Since they don't speak, we don't know how much they've been taught. If they never speak, they I would probably have to say that they never said a word... meaning ZERO vocabulary. However, if you're talking about signing... then I'm sure the number is lower than 1,400 since some kids who are deaf sign ASL. If they were taught SEE, then they could have the same opportunity as those who speak.
