Sandwiches cause woman to faint

A peculiar reaction to sandwiches caused a woman to suffer unexplained fainting fits, doctors have reported.

The woman, 25, was seen in hospital complaining of short 10-second episodes of feeling "light-headed, occasionally nauseous, and suddenly and alarmingly unwell".

On more than one occasion she had collapsed. The problem had started when she was aged 15, sometimes recurring several times a week.

A battery of tests and investigations had failed to disclose anything abnormal.

The episodes tended to occur when the woman consumed certain types of food, particularly sandwiches and fizzy drinks.

She had last collapsed when eating a sandwich while driving. Fortunately, her car was stationary in a queue of traffic.

Dr Christopher Boos, from University Hospital Birmingham, described what happened when doctors gave the woman a sandwich.

She immediately suffered an electrical abnormality in her heart, which stopped beating for two seconds.

Dr Boos and three colleagues wrote in The Lancet medical journal: "The patient felt light-headed, as though she were about to faint, but did not."

The woman was finally diagnosed with "swallow syncope" - a rare condition in which the action of swallowing triggers nerve reflexes that cause the heart to stop temporarily.

The doctors wrote: "Swallow syncope, also known as deglutition syncope, is, by definition, a transient alteration or loss of consciousness during swallowing, and is usually intermittent.

"Patients with swallow syncope can languish for years because the diagnosis is little known - although a case report on it was published in The Lancet 50 years ago."

The woman was fitted with a pacemaker to overcome the problem, and when last seen in June was free of fainting.

Weird...

That is unusual. I never knew about this syndrome before. Interesting.

i've heard about this before. liebling posted recently about one of her sons having syncope as well, but not the type described in this article.

She could quit eating sandwiches..problem solved!
:giggle:
It's not really sandwiches that's the problem. It's anything that requires hard swallowing that normally comes with eating sandwiches.

Interesting, I haven't heard of this syndrome until now.

So, It seems like the pacemaker helped her be free of fainting while she swallows? Wouldn't it also have to do something with the esophagus lining too?

oh, i know..i was just kidding..
Seriously, it is awful not able to swallow normally,
sounds like when she swallow food, it kind of cut
of her breathing in the esophagus section?

It's the same concept with people who pass out while urinating while drunk.

Since alcohol is a depressant, relieving yourself a bit too much can make you pass out.

Parts of our bodies take little extra effort to perform their function. So, there are other organs to ensure that these organs stay on track. In this case, the girl's heart wasn't able to maintain her body functions after the extra effort of her swallowing was done.

That makes sense, Thanks for clearing it up.

wow, vampy. you know alot about the effects of alcohol on the body (although i also knew about the effects of being drunk, urination and passing out).

it looks like we have two doctors here on ad: dr. vampy and dr. jiro. :D

Hahaha... yeah!

Just kidding...

I actually read an article on this a few years ago. It mentioned how blood flows differently when a person is using muscles to urinate. However, with alcohol making you more tiresome (and lightheaded)... the brain can't handle the blood flow as it should and a person who is drunk is likely to pass out while urinating.

(That would explain why you see a bunch of drunk passed out people in the bathroom.) ;)
