A Sandusky woman was arrested for trying to hire a hitman to kill her ex-boyfriend. Friday, she was charged with solicitation of murder; a five year felony.
A custody battle over a 6-year-old girl has woman behind bars. Investigators said 34-year-old Karen Martin was willing to pay to have her 48-year-old ex-boyfriend, Darrell Bedwell, from Rochester Hills killed. Both Martin and Bedwell are deaf.
The case began when the woman told a friend online she wanted to hire a hitman. That friend told police and officers began communicating with the suspect, posing as a hitman.
Police said Martin was arrested after meeting with an undercover officer in a parking lot at Meijer in Ft. Gratiot.
Bedwell told Action News that he is scared and only wants to protect his daughter. He thinks Karen was jealous of his new wife and family.
Michigan State Police D/Sgt. David Robertson said, "It’s a unique case. Things don’t surprise me any more, but this is a very unique case, as far as the hearing impaired."
Martin was being held at the St. Clair County Jail.
