So does anyone think that there will ever be a cure for hearing loss or other disabilties? I don't. I hate to say it but I'm just too cynical to think that companies that profit from disabilties (like wheelchair/walker/ostomy supply/hearing aid/CI/fill in the blank with whatever medical need here) would give up their profits without a fight. Plus I think that people should learn to live with their disabilties. A disabilty isn't nessarily a horrible thing. It's sort of like homosexuality in that way.

Well, DeafDyke,

That is a interesting question to bring up.

Um, for some disabilities, yeah, there'll be cure someday.

But also for other disabilities, no.

You said the companies who specialized in providing for the disabled will put up a fight and stop the medical process, well, it's not possible as I believe the medicine and research fields has more power and more support from the masses.
And the companies simply will have to change their focus. They needn't worry just yet as there'll alway be people needing their products such as hospitals etc. They'd still get rich now and even later. There's always money to be made regardless of the outcome.

Well, deafness is a physical disability so you can't exactly "cure" it. If it was something like a virus or disease, then you can "cure" it. I'm sure they will find ways to make a deaf baby hearing before it was born if they knew it would be deaf or a special operation to fix it when they are born?

I hope that they wont ever cure deafness. We all need to be different on Earth to teach folks compassion, patience and understanding that no one is perfect.

I do hope that they cure fibromyalgia - it is a horrible disease. I took my having fibromyalgia 100 times worse than being deaf.

Vampy -- i read somewhere that there is a way to "prevent" a child that would have been born deaf by fiddling with the DNA to suit the parent(s)-to-be just like choosing a gender of the child -- im unsure how to explain this nor know how this really works -- i would have to find that info and post it in here at some point IF i ever find it

Yeah, that's true. Sad, huh? If my child was born deaf, fine. If my child was born hearing, fine. I don't care. I think that DNA modification should be used to remove genetic problems related to disorders, diseases, cancer, etc... not deafness.

I think the world needs to stay diverse, because otherwise the world will be so boring...

I don't think there'll ever be a "cure" for deafness because deafness originized soo many years ago... there are tons of 'deaf' animals too, and i'm sure there were 'deaf' dinosaurs.

I think parents who go in for DNA testing are really trying to make things too simple for themselves. The doctors could have been wrong! It's like you deciding to abort your baby because you got a report that it was going to be deformed, etc... but it turns out it was developing just fine and the doctors were incorrect. Ugh!

Yep, my cat is deaf too, or HOH...imagine that! I didn't even know that until after I adopted him and noticed that he doesn't respond to sounds at all, except maybe if I am banging an empty water bottle against my hand cuz that is very loud. He is a white cat though, and it is a common thing for white cats. But he doesn't have blue eyes so I dunno :dunno:

I say that anything is possible, and I won't cancel out the idea that there may be a cure someday for disabilities. We have come so far in the past century. And those companies for hearing aids, wheelchairs, etc...that would be SELFISH of them to not want people to have disablities cured.

I agree though, that the world would be a very boring place if everyone was perfect.

be nice if we borrowed the dna from a giant sequoia trees, then we will be "disease free" and live for thousand of years ;)

I second that. I know how Fibromyalgia affects people. My host mother has that disease as well as her good friend. It limits their movements. :( Hope you're doing okay though

Yes, I have heard about it -- it's like genetic molding of a baby before he/she is completely developed in-utero. I absolutely am AGAINST this type of practise because it's obvious people are still biased and wanting to have 'perfect babies' -- it can't be done like this.

:werd: i totally agree with u WaterRats -- im also against this practice altho it does happen! :madfawk:

Yes, I think they should cure stuff that causes pain or is fatal or severely compromises quality of life, like cancer, some forms of muscular dystrphy (like the kind that Mattie Stephank died from) leukeodystrophy (the thing that Lorenzo Oil was about) and things like that.

As long as the life guard is not attending the gene pool, I don't think they will ever cure deafness. :thumb: :thumb:
