Why do Deaf people watch Hospital dramas on TV

I know people that are not deaf or HOH and they watch House , ER and whatever hospitals on TV ! What does being deaf or HOH have to do with liking to watch House! It is good show and both hearing and deaf people like to watch good shows!

Yes, it is a reality show. I noticed that they picked two families that are the opposite. Like a messy family and a neat family. Or a mother who is very strict and a mother who is very lax. They swamp the wives and we watch the drama unfolded. Sometimes that helps families to change for better. They do get money out of this.

Yeah I get what you mean, heh heh!

It'd be the husbands signing up their wives for the Wife Swap so they can take their new wives for a test drive! :giggle:

wait a min! i lied. i realize that i do watch the HOUSE. just because he's a hottie guy. =X Well, he's so hilarious for twisting people's mind for good reasons.

Indeed, House MD is only the well interesting show on major network.

Right now, there is another I'm current interesting on Nurse Jackie is only on Showtime. It's really awesome, like House MD but instead not doctor but nurse situation. Big messy!

that's not the point, of course there are going to be some d/Deaf people not interested in medical drama shows. This thread is aimed to those who are,who do enjoy it, and at it, there are going to be different reasons, that is what i am interested in. Well also identifying the similarities helps to draw up the descriptions of how deaf people enjoy it differently could be noted.

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY

Do you watch enjoy watching hospital dramas? like ER, House, Grey's Anatomy, Chicago Hope ??
Seldom do because I prefer crime shows.
Have any of you thought of explaining what is like to be d/Deaf watching these hospital dramas, put differently does it reassures you as a 'normal' person in such a way that viewing these shows provides you an escape from the existence of being a d/Deaf person and perhaps even use it as an oppurtunity to pretend to be one of the doctors/nurses in the series, or perhaps identifying with the characters or settings?
More like checking out if they correctly portray that deaf character or not. Or checking if the deaf actor/actress is really a Deaf person or not. I recalled they use a hearing actress as a deaf character and she talked like a deaf person. I didn't like that as it is like using a blackface (white actor painted his face black years ago).
So you find hospital depicted as nurturing caring or hostile environment?
how do you find the depiction of deaf or Deaf or hard of hearing paitents fairly accurate or not ?
Not always. I don't like somebody who can read-lip perfectly because that is not accurate picture of the deaf population. Or a person who can speak perfectly.
why not or why you think so also lastly do you find the knowleges of medical terms and practice depicted to be empowering? (as so you learn something or already knows but also see difficult ethical dilemmas as very intellectually inviting?
I think it is good to know about medical stuff as you might need this or that in the future or something that you need to watch out for certain signs so you can get medical help fast.
Or does certain characters/stars attractive giving appeal to the show worthy to watch or perhaps what about environmen cleaniness and ordered? or bloody and infested in the midst of chaos? Like does disorder seem more appealing to watch?
Not sure what do you mean. I like crime shows and sometimes there are violence and bloody.
Also when watching hospital dramas do you find it imperative to have subtitles on for the contents to be fulfilled with proper access to script dialogue?
You bet as I need to know what was being said.
Which are;
A) how important for us to use subtitles, how does it enable us to connect with lofty medical terms and diagnosis made in the scenes as well as the complex (and interesting?) interaction between staffs which often cross over the boundary work and social.
I would like to know more about medical diagnosis especially that I am middle-aged.
B) Does watching hospital drama makes you temporary as a superior individual as 'borrowed' god-like watching over the doctors' prognosis and diagnosis?
No, I just see that as education.
C) does the realness of medical mishaps and tension in saving a life makes for dramatic escapism superior to action / conventional dramas? put in another way, does viewing something morbid seem to give 'balance' in TV watching, as opposed to sanitisied entertainment as where perfectionism is thrown out for instance, displays of luxuary items becomes less important, or indeed more important/emphasied in "Nip and Tuck" series where the dramas surround cosmetics sugery of the wealthy?
It might be dramatic and hold your attention for so long. Sometimes that could teach you something. For example, they cut off the wrong limb and I have heard of how people write "Leave this one alone" on the good limb" after learning of this mishap in the news/tv/etc.

im not big fans of wife swap!!

in this thread, we are talking about hospital/medical dramas on TV, someone raise wife swap, it's not relevent.
so please think about why do you like hospital dramas, look at some people's long reply see what they say, does it make sense?

thanks

thanks i like your comments, its good, your reference to blackface is an interesting analogy, i like that too
:)

why would anyone what to pretend to be one of the doctor or nurses in the show! I think you're asking a very strange question!

I don't watch hospital dramas. If my dad is watching House, I have sometimes sat and watched it. I have only seen a couple of House episodes though. So I can safely say I don't watch them. They don't really appeal to me. I'm not too big of a fan of the drama genre anyways.

Thanks, I just remember the movie in 1979 called "Voices" starring by Amy Irving. Amy Irving acted as a deaf dancer. That is what I was thinking of when I mentioned blackface in my post in this thread.
