Why Cochlear Implants Hurt Deaf Culture?

IMO,
CI nor hearing aids are not a miracle, a miracle would be if Jesus made me hearing today, without any device to help me with hearing sounds, now that would been a miracle.
You're still deaf when the CI or hearing aids are turned off. How is that a miracle?

Seriously, I am saying it's up to you how are you going to be with or without device.
Obviously without CI you ('you' -as in general meaning) have no choice or not much where to belong- deaf or hearing group.
Once you have CI it's up to you if you choose to keep your ties with deaf culture or to sever it.
It's not CI that makes you separate yourself from the deaf- it's what YOU want to be. YOUR choice.
If I was deaf I probably would at first try to immerse myself as much as possible in hearing world,
but I am sure once the novelty would wear off, I would come back to my senses and back to deaf world as well
Now, some people may choose to never go back to deaf ways but I suspect these people were NEVER comfortable as deaf in the first place.

depends how you look at it- I think it IS a miracle - turn the hearing on and off...
... just feel it
if you did that like say 500 years ago they would say you are a very powerful witch....

Actually it would not matter if some people were never comfortable being deaf in the first place, once they're implant with CI or wear hearing aids, they're still deaf or hard of hearing, and they have to learn to accept it and move on....
You're right for one thing, they have the right to choose whether they want o fit in one world or both, but believe me it will never change the fact that they're still deaf or hard of hearing period...

Angel - Here in NY, there are soo many Deafies who have CI - Children and Adult. They are still involved with deaf community. Deaf Culture is still around in NY but like GA said maybe in the future, it might be. This is quite right - so, as you see it's not CI that changes them but how they see themselves.

because you don't support the implantation in children while I do because I do see the benefit is great. That does not means I wants to force them. The parents has to be fully informed and they have to made a serious decision after they factor everything in. Like, parent needs to look at surrounding around the family, environment etc. Family of deaf child should not appease the deaf community or mainstream (hearing) community to make them happy. I don't believe you have read most of my posts, I did said that I don't have a problem with deaf children being implanted with CI but I do have a problem with CI being implanted on babies cause they're too little and it's hard to tell whether or not a baby can hear so well with the use of hearing aids...

So how is it that over the past 20 years the CI has hurt the deaf culture? I have heard that some that get CI's turn their back on the deaf culture. I would equate that to someone turning their back on their heritage. A spanish woman marries an english man and then turns her back on her spanish culture. This will happen but is more a reflection on the person and not the culture. And how is the culture hurt by this? One might say its a reduction in the population of the deaf culture but it can be argued that for each that leaves, one or more join. Is there any real indication that the deaf culture is being hurt by CI's. Are there any metrics to back up the claim. I am not agreeing or disagreeing here but meerly asking for some clearification.

Cheri, That is sad but as I have said in other posts; If these people that you call friends turn their back on you after getting a CI, then they were not really friends to begin with. True friends would not do that. These are just bad people that are now showing their true colors. And besides, how can anyone not want to be your friend?
