I will be traveling by train from DEto UT in mid November via MD, PA, OH, IN, IL, IA, NE, CO. I'm curious as to how much snow these states GENERALLY get in November which might cause delays.

OH, IN, IL - northern most part
IA, NE - southern part
CO - northern/central
UT - central/northern (getting off just before Salt Lake City

November? Good luck with Colorado. You never know. It can be either 80 or blizzard conditions. But generally on the foothills its 50-60 degrees and very sunny. The mountain highways usually are very clear at this time of the year.

I don't think southern Iowa gets that much snow until December.

Northern IN doesn't get too much snow in November, and there can be plenty of days that reach 60s-70s. This year, we got our first flurries in October but didn't see serious snow until early December. Typically, snow sticks and stays starting in late December. We had 6-12" permanently on the ground for the better part of December, January, and February this year.

Go further south before heading west. It'll be better.

Can't, though I'd like to. To get to Orem, UT, I have to take the California Zephyr from Chicago. From DE, I'll be going to DC to catch the Capital Limited to Chicago. There is another train (but not on my travel day) that takes a "southern" route from DE to Chicago.

I figured the "heavy" snow wouldn't be till later in the season. I'm hoping Denver is not too snowy in November either as most likely my flight back from UT will have a stop-over there.

I think November is a pretty good month along your route. Late November can have more snow though.

You might possibly get a little snow in Ohio if you're near the lake. They don't call it "lake effect snow" for nothing! But mid-November, probably not much. I doubt that there would be anywhere near enough to disrupt train travel.

I love it that you're going by train, by the way. Hope you have some good books to read on the trip.

I am in Chicago. I wouldn't expect snow at beginning and mid November. Late November, yes, you may get in contact with snow. It will be more expensive to travel closer to Thanksgivings.

The best luck.

On average, it won't be too bad in mid-Novemeber but in Dec to Feb and sometimes March usually are the worst months for snow. Usually trains can go thru snow better than driving on the roads.

November weather in OH is really unpredictable, but generally, we don't get snow that is severe enough to cause delays in flights until late in Nov. to early Dec. Some years it is mid Dec before the snow is a problem.

But the weather will be cold, so bring warm clothes.

There is historical data on Weather Underground that you can check to see what happens on average during the month of November for almost any location.

I've been sweating non-stop since I came to Florida last Tuesday. I also have been wearing flip-flops since then. I can't wait to go back to NJ for cooler weather.

When are you coming back, Loveblue? Also by train? Or is this a permanent move?
Going to my daughter's for Thanksgiving. I've always wanted to go cross-country by train and I have that opportunity now (have the time). We're leaving (my other daughter) the Sat before Thanksgiving and hopefully will arrive in Provo 9:30 Monday night. We're flying back the Sat after Thanksgiving (I'd consider flying back on Fri, but I believe my daughter/SIL have plans for us to go to the outdoor mall in SLC where he works for Black Friday activities).
Reasons NOT to take the train back:
Time - daughter who's traveling with me needs to be back to school on Monday
More expensive because it is Thanksgivng weekend
Train departs Provo around 4 AM

MD and PA rarely get snow in November. In fact, in the past 11 years that I have lived in MD, I think it only snowed once in November but only like 5 inches which all melted the next day due to the ground not being cold enough yet.

I took a train for several hundred miles once. It was very enjoyable and much nicer than riding Greyhound.

I would love to have the time to just kick back and take a train cross country. I envy LoveBlue this trip.:P
