What should I look out for with this motorcycle?

I am getting a 1982 Yamaha 750 in 2 weeks. It still runs well. Is there anything in particular I should take careful consideration of?

I plan to use it for daily commuting to save gas.
 
Make sure tires are in good shape..

Make sure the chain is not too tight nor too loose.
 
Make sure you know how to ride it. That's a mean machine.
 
I have had many motorcycles - it is shaft driven - not chain driven.
 
I hear stories about rear wheels locking up when downshifting. I have no idea how widespread the problem is.
 
Wear safe gear and clothing. Don't trust cage drivers.

How many miles on the bike? Check the seals on shocks. Make sure chains look well lubed. Otherwise hit the road and enjoy!

can't think of any because Yamaha is THAT reliable. BMW riders even swapped their forks with Yamaha.

I'm sure you know what you're doing and if you say it's good, it's good. that's how good it is. Pix would be nice so I can see where to check out.

No, not yet. The PO is letting me make two payments on it. I made the first one this past Tuesday. I should have taken a picture then - it is an 82 Yamaha 750 XJ Maxim. It will most definitely need new paint - I wish they left it alone - they did a spray bomb job on it. They even painted the engine with high heat enamel paint (ugh). I am going to have to remove the engine, clean it, paint it with REAL engine enamel and bake it on.

I am planning on using House of Kolor paints and go to an auto painting store for the hardener to make it gas proof.

I plan to post pictures of it before and after the paint job - I just haven't decided what color yet - I like candy apple red by House of Kolor.

I am going to turn this into a reliable bike and take a trip to Arizona to see a long lost friend - member of the Navajo Nation.
 
Hopefully you are not gonna to to all that trouble (paint job, remove the high heat enamel paint, etc) before you are satisfied that it REALLY DOES run well......oh, wait....you already have it half paid for.....hmmmmmm. Have fun

You can fix anything with duct tape and an adjustable wrench (j/k)

Yes - almost like it. I also know how to do metal leafing - I am brainstorming on how to not mess it up. :giggle:

Have you ever seen the type of painting where they spray a coat of silver enamel paint, wrap it in plastic wrap to give it a groovy design, then spray a colored clear coat over it?

Looks friggin awesome.

no idea what's it like. I'm not too big on paint job. I emphasize more on functionality than design.
