HILTON HEAD ISLAND — That alligator that was put down after it grabbed a soccer ball near some children playing on Hilton Head Island apparently had a hankering for athletic equipment.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that an examination shows the 13-foot alligator had eaten two baseballs, a tennis ball, two other balls, as well as 53 fishing lures and a half pound of lead sinkers.

It also had eaten a 4-foot gator.

Mark Carinus with Critter Management also said the animal had eaten 48 rocks.

The alligator was captured several days after it had taken a soccer ball and then spit it back. The gator was too large to relocate under state law.

None of the children were injured.

Not included in the online story but in the paper article:

Two turtles, a beer can, and 48 rocks.

"It's not unusual for the wranglers at Critter Management to find a gator digesting in a larger one's stomach, Carinus said. They also frequently find gators covered in teeth marks from territorial battles."

There is gatgor found in Dallas at Trinity River. It's unusually.

I know crocodiles eat rocks to help them dive and digest foods. Not sure about gators. Perhaps it thought all the balls were rocks. As for eating the smaller gator. He was hungry.

Yeah, and at 13-foot, he was probably a monster.

We have one in the canal next to the neighborhood. He isn't able to get out. There's actually quite a few of them in the canals in Palm Beach County.

We have them too. And knowling that my little doggie would be a tasty snack for a Gator, I watch her at all times whenever she is in the backyard. But with the very high enbankment, it's very or highly unlikely they could ever crawl out of the river.....But I had a dream one night, that we had a very bad hurricane and Gators were all over the yard, blown out from the winds and the enbankment over flooding.....gave me the creeps :eek3:

Right, the embankments by our neighborhood are 10 feet high.

You know there is a storm that will head our way over the weekend. It is suppose to be a huge rain maker.

Right. I did hear about it. Luckily, all the construction stuff that can be moved is in the garage. Biggest problem is, there are no doors or windows on the garage anymore.
