I often see the barbed wire design on jewelry, tatoos, clothing, pictures, etc. What does it mean?

Barbed wires just like top of prison's fences an inmates attempts to escape, it's ripped the inmate's clothes and wounds.

So, if someone wears barbed wire emblems it means they support prisoners?

Sorry, I don't fully understand.

Does that mean it's an anti-Republican symbol?

I wondered about that, too? I am surprised I am not the only one who wondered what it means? LOL..

I found this info..

Barbed wire has been reported as a tool for human torture. When used as a whip it causes deep lacerations and severe bleeding.

Yep, it may sound like....

Nope, I was just kidding you....

That is not a prison tattoo since it must show "chains".

Reba, you may need to visit the gang bars in your county. The fellas would not hurt you if you inquire...if you change your mind, contact your old army buddies...

I know what real barbed wire is and its uses. (Also, razer wire, concertina wire, etc.) I was just curious about the symbolism , and why people want to wear that image. I see it printed on all kinds of merchandise, so I was wondering what it meant.

For example, everyone knows that the "peace" symbol (broken upside-down cross inside a circle) represents anti-war support. The "fish" symbol means Christian. So, various symbols have popular meanings.

I'm just behind the times and don't know the barbed wire meaning. :dunno:

I don't have "old army buddies"; I have "old Navy (and some Marine) shipmates". :D

Anyway, none of them have those tatoos.

Barbwire Tattoo Designs
a tattoo design that first came out of prison culture, was adopted in Latino culture in Southern California, was then co-opted by modern tribal tattoo genre artists and then wildly popularized by Pamela Anderson! An interesting evolution for a tattoo design. Popular with both men and women, especially for arm bands. The definition of barbwire is: strong wire with barbs at regular intervals used to prevent passage.

This is one example of what I mean:

Really, there is no symbolism. People just think it looks tuff.

Barbed wire means is a type of fencing wire constructed with sharp edges or points arranged at intervals along the strand(s). It is used to construct inexpensive fences and also on walls surrounding secured property. A person or animal trying to pass through or over barbed wire will suffer discomfort and possibly injury. Barbed wire fencing requires only fenceposts, wire and fixing devices such as staples. It is simple to construct and quick to erect by a skilled, or even an unskilled fencer.

There are tons of things that are barbed wired, As you see you there are some links that I posted so check them out....

I don't think that there is any real meaning behind the barbed wire. Some people get it because it looks cool. Some get it and have it look like it's bleeding for a "cooler" effect. Some get it because it represents toughness. It could be anything. I think the best person to ask would be the person who got the barbed wire tattoo.

I don't personally know anyone with the tatoo; I've only seen pictures, or passersby with it. I have seen products in stores with the barbed wire pictures (like on T shirts). I was just wondering why it was popular, if it had some kind of cultural meaning.

I might be approaching senility but I don't want to be totally clueless! :dizzy:
