When I first went to college, I was rather undecided just like most freshman/sophomores out there. So I did my best and made do with what I understood to be open to me. I ended up with the Community Psychology degree and little did I realize how useless it is.

My questions are as followed:
- What can I do with this degree out in the Deaf world? I'm aware of group homes and such but that's it?
- What degrees be it BA, Masters, and PhD do we Deaf community need the most, to quote my friend, "We're crying in need for [enter degree here]"?

I'm aware that the questions are rather general but I'm nearly at my wits end, not sure how to apply what I have in front of me after working 8 years in the group home type environment. In a real life nod to Hallmark-type movies, I made a promise to my dying father that I will get a Masters/PhD degree in something and I need to find out what it is that is needed out there and I will take those information and see how I fit in that. It just pains me that it's been nearly two years now since my father passed away and I am not doing a very good job keeping my word to him as a son...

That's why I came here, to see if some folks can help me out, show me a better "A-B-C" way of seeing paths or what not. (i.e if I don't see it, I wont think about it such as "To be a medical doctor, take the biology degree route" which no one told me until I was a Junior, well into my established major)

I am, for the most part, an open book so feel free to ask away for more information. I just need to kick myself in the arse and get my life going again before my time on Earth is done.

I need you guy's help. Please.
Thank you to any in advance.

I got a degree in deaf counseling, but I hated college!!! My now ex girlfriend had tried to persuade me to open a counseling for deaf people, but I don't think I can do anything with a BS degree. Plus, I don't feel like I can counsel other deaf people the way I'm going about life right now.

I feel for you. I wish the best luck with you.

PhD in Psychology is a good bet if you are a fluent ASL user as there are not enough to meet demand.

Aye, been thinking about a PhD in Psychology as I'm a Deaf man with fluent ASL and English speaking/writing. I am just not sure what or rather where I can go with it. I am very interested in behavioral analysis but I'm also not sure how to apply that to the Deaf community as there are hardly anyone to "mentor" me so to speak/sign.

Try getting a job at the VA Hospital. www.USAJobs.gov

Being disabled and having a degree, you'd find more options and the job is secure, something not many can say in this economy. Something to consider.....look under "Veterans Affairs."

You can use your psychology knowledge to start your drug enterprise.

Are you also orally skilled? You could maybe work on your Ph.D/Master's and then open a practice targeted towards counseling hearing parents of newly identified dhh kids.....also you could specialize in treating mainstreamed dhh kids too.

I have a BS in Political Science, another useless major.

One thing to remember is that many positions require only that you have a bachelor's degree, period. That is, they don't care what your major was--they only want to see "BA" or "BS." You aren't limited to your college field.

Hopefully you are right, Reba.

After thinking about it for a while, I think maybe I should just get a Masters and PhD in Psychology itself and use that to apply wherever.

But meanwhile, I'm also still thinking of what areas of focus a BA in Community Psychology has in the job field outside of Group home. Still hoping someone will come up with something I have not yet found on Google. Small hope there.

One problem with the Deaf culture: It's real hard to get the feel of what we need in experts and specialists since not many are telling each other what we need. We're always relying on hearing people to tell us what they think we need...

Do you think that many deaf people are thinking oh well, there are no psychologists who knows ASL. SO they're keeping their problems to themselves and not telling anyone.

Look, if a person was frustrated, they would look in phone book for a psychologist. Do you know if any of the psychologists from phone book is deaf? Or maybe via google?

Say, I want a psychologist in Chicago. I google "Psychologist in Chicago". I will get a lot of information. A lot!!!!!

So what if someone googled "Deaf psychologist in Chicago" or maybe "ASL Psychologist in Chicago". How much lead will you find from this? Compare the 2.

Now try a small town in North Dakota. Are there any psychologist who are deaf in the area? Maybe a radius of 50 miles? 200 miles?

How many people will want to drive 2 hours for a 30 minute session?

Yeah, if you want to go in area of psychologist for deaf, go for it!! I'm sure the future will be rosy.

I'm in great great need of a psychologist with deaf culture!! I have been waiting for over a year now to get one. My son needs a psyc eval with a adequate IQ score. The one he has now was done through a interpreter and they always write that there was limitations. When they do this, it affects the scores. We have been waiting for the right diagnosis for a long time now. They just don't understand deaf culture! He also can not get adequate Counceling or therapeutic services because he is cognitaly delayed and refuses to cooperate with those that use interpreters. He wants one on one contact.
