I know that TTY is vital among other things: But what products would you say are vital for a deaf individual?

Also, are such products, in your view, fairly priced or expensive?

You asked what deaf and hoh what products they must have? I think what some deaf and hoh could use is fire alarm protection and weather alert device for them. Since deaf and hoh equipments are very expensive to buy as well as deaf and blind too. I think deaf, hoh and deaf and blind should have equipment product to reduce the cost for people with disabilites. :)

My list of "personal must haves"

1)TTY ( I actually have a Uniphone) - though I email and IM alot ... I still need the TTY since in Canada there's no IP-Relay service as yet. I use Direct connect ... EARS make me nuts !!!

2)Visual Signallers (Flasher for phone, doorbell, and alarm clock)

3)Sonic Boom Alarm clock ( set to vib, not flash)

4)TV with CC (or subtitles )

5)email/ IM

6)lots of light !!!

oh and call display !!!

the one scary thing is in my apt I don't have a visual signaller for the fire alarm (either in my apt, or the building one) which is REALLY scary ! I am listed with the fire/police as being hoh/deaf and my neighbours & landlord know to ring my doorbell if theres an emergency ... thank God it's been onk so far ... but it's still a bit scary

Didn't you know that the technolgy today is better for us?

That the TTY was rarely used, most deafies rely on mobile phones, internet, VP, and other new techonologies.

I still keep my TTY, because we need to keep TTY as back up to call "911" sevice. Sorenson, D-link VP and web cam do not accpet to call "911" emergencies calls. But I have noticed some cell phones too have emergencies to call for help. Hopefully Sorenson and any other VP set up "911" calls for deaf to call for serious emergency.

That's the only reasons you can keep the TTY for a while. My TTY is currently disconnected and the last time I used was long time ago. Boy, we are in the future, dont we all?

Yes, same here I do keep TTY online for 911 emergencies. Pretty much today, the network is the primary communications for everyone - internet, cell phones for example. Home landline phones are more rarely used nowadays because pretty much every home have high speed internet and having cell phones to 'replace' the landline phone.

Yep, we come along way with so much techologies taking over. But I wish they still need to make more teacholoy better for deaf, hoh, deaf-blind to have a baby crier, they have very few limited.

Actually, with Sorenson VP, you are able to call 911 now.

Go to this site and click on Sorenson VRS Info then click on Can I use Sorenson VRS to make a 911 call?

I am pretty sure other VRS providers are able to call 911 for you.

I'm jealous about these deaf people having VP's. We don't have these down here, just yet.

You can buy D-Link DVC-1000 videophone in your area.
Cheap D-Link DVC-1000 - Price Comparison - Buy at cheap prices

But it s too expensive than USA. It costs AUD $348.18 = USD $321.77

It s cheaper price in USA about USD $145.00 = AUD $156.95

I know that almost deaf Australians could not afford to buy D-Link videophones.

You may interest to buy it from USA D-Link DVC 1000, Networking, Computers Networking items on eBay.com

eBay Australia - D-Link DVC 1000 items at low prices
