Warning: don't use a flourscent bulb with sorenson

Hmm I wonder if that is true and where is source for the mercury in energy bulb and how did it kill someone? I have not heard nor can't find a news source for that information. If you provide the evidence then we will know and warn us. I do have the energy bulb for my VP and never had any problems. This case is unheard of.

By the way, if the bulb does have mercury it would not have end up in the market and would have a warning label on it. I don't see any on the label on the bulb market.

That guy probably have a defect bulb or the lamp itself. Perhaps his death caused by something else, not the bulb itself unless the evidence support and proved.

Either this is made up or an hoax to scare people IMO.

No, it is not hoax, most light bulbs have mercury and other gases, Flourscent lamps tend to have higher content of mercury and Argon gas. Even incandent lamp does have mercury and argon gas but far less than flourscent lamp. The difference was that the incandent lamp use filament to cause the light from electricity. it was close to "short circuit" that causes heat but because there is no oxygen in it, the filament can't burnt out fast, and mercury, Argon gas makes filament last longer. While flourscent lamp use both gas plus other gases, and they uses atoms to smash from one to others that is what causes it to glow.

Right now, do you notice mercury filled thermometer nowadays? Years ago, during my childhood and earlier times, mercury thermometer was everywhere. They have phased out because of extremly dangerous mercury levels. Much much higher than in bulbs.

I know one story about couple kids actually smoke cigarette with mercury filled in it, Kids have found bunch of mercury in old factory and add that into cigarettes, few days later both of kids died from that.

I would NEVER use CF or any flourscent lights as flasher, they are not designed for that and can shorten its life significantly. not worth the cost (it cost more, and you get much less life out of it)

Use regular bulb or Xennon (strobe) bulbs for flasher.

If you're so worried about mercury, then you could try LED lamps like those shown here. LEDs use semiconductors instead of mercury and save energy too because they don't make so much heat like incandescent bulbs. They're still expensive, but last a long time and fade slowly instead of failing suddenly. They come in several colors too. They still need development with what colors they emit to make things look normally colored.

One LED can be really bright, like those on keyrings. I had a friend who liked to flash one of them into my eyes.:eek3: They come in clusters to make even more light. I plan on getting a LED flashlight because they're very bright and last longer than bulbs. I could find only candles and our oil lamp the last time we lost power.

On the page it says:

Every 18 months the luminous intensity of LED lamps doubles. The expectation is that in 2010 the luminous intensity will be high enough to replace the extra long fluorescent lamps.

Lots of cool stuff can be done with LEDs. There are toys that use LEDs of different colors to glow, like the three egg shaped lamps I have for decor. They also are putting LEDs into traffic lights because they last longer. It looks like the color display on the ceiling of Dining Commons at RIT uses LEDs. I've seen kits of LEDs online for doing that kind of thing. People also put LEDs into their computer cases to make them look cool like the ones here

You shouldn't be using CFLs for flashing alerts on things like videophones because the CFLs take time to start up because they need to start up the ballasts that start up the lamps. I had a friend who tried using a CFL with his bed alarm and it apparently made the ballast fail. A LED lamp could be really good for alarms because they're so bright. :eek3:

Healing with LEDs

LEDs are also used in the medical arena to facilitate healing. Far Infra Red
LEDs especially help in the healing process. They are even using these lights
to heal bed sores or ulcers in people who are bed ridden. They also heal
burns created by radiation therapy. Because they are so cool you can get
the infrared light very close to the skin which can penetrate up to six inches.
Neat huh?!
