I am curious ... Are there any videophones for hearing people like family & relatives ? How much do they cost ? This is the year 2010. I am sure technology has improved since then. Thank you.

Skype? All my family is hearing. That is what they all use.

Videophones... for hearing? There's quite a few models out there. Are you asking for P2P (point-to-point) using a VRS equipment like Purple's P3 and ZVRS's Ojo on your receiving end, and a videophone on the hearing person's end?

A lot of people just go with a softphone software and a webcam like XMeeting, iChat, Skype, Ekiga and so on.

Something similar to Sorenson's VP-200 on the top of the t.v. but this is for my family & relatives.

Since there's bunch of instant messaging softwares out there... (including iChat too!) and now many VRS offer ip relay via IM like AIM... and I realized I do not need VP to make a peer to peer (or point to point) calls since the broadband internet is sufficient enough to initiate a videochat with one other! (I realized this after Z4 was launched last monday and it provided similar functions to iChat: 3 way chat, video recording, presentation, text or video relay, etc! and I am like why am I clamoring to get Z4 when I already have those features on iChat! sheesh! )

And nowaday, many can add a mini computer like Revo, Mac mini, or other computer that is in mini size and add webcam like iSight or such then can start videochat from couch like we can do with VP.
( Mac Media Center Made Simple - a set on Flickr be sure to visit the website for that media center)
Or buy a 27" iMac and turn it into a media center and communication center!
Apple - iMac - The ultimate all-in-one desktop computer. since it has built in iSight!

You see HOVRS discontinued distributing MVP because they focused on P3 and P3 Netbook meaning $ sales for them while MVP were free. They will continue to support MVP.
ZVRS don't give away their VP for free and wants $ (of course at discount for dhh and full price for hearing) but give way free Z4 for your pc or mac.

I have not used my VP (I have VP 200, MVP and d-link) much lately because I have iChat on my iMac and I have IM/Text on iPhone (can make text relay call on it!)

So check out ooVoo or invest on webcam and use AIM or any IM software instead instead of VP.

Z4 seem is awesome tech. Why? They have good program that allow both laptop: PC/Mac to have true 10-digit number and make call with VRS or point-to-point. Finally.. no more ip-address.

Maybe Holographic in 20 years later.

What about one of them has for example, a iMac then I have a Logitech webcam ?

What can be done to improve the picture and moving quality ? Thank you.

Yeah Boult, What about the picture & signing quality ? I used ooVoo with some Deaf ppl before and the quality was excellent. Would this work with iMac or what ?
ooVoo works on Mac

Can anyone recommend which netbook is good for vp use? I notice most netbook built in webcam is 0.3 mp, only a few is 1.3 mp. Does this make a big difference on a routine vp call?

Get any netbook that have 1.3 MP webcam, but it really doesn't matter - since most of them somtimes doesn't give any good qauility in streaming. Only recommedation I can give is to get a external webcam - logitech Webcam QuickCam Pro 9000 or Quick Cam pro notebook cam - both are fantastic.
