I did the same.
As for being scared to drive again . . . well, she may be the first time she gets into the driver's seat. I was when I had my first one in 1985 with no injuries. I changed the way I drove after that, too, by the way. The #1 thing I do while I drive is my head is always, always, always moving from side to side and in my mirrors . . . all the time. Was my accident preventable? You bet it was! Was Katie's? Yes, she should have been watching while turning. I'd slam on my brakes and not care if the people behind me hit me, as then it would be their fault, not mine, as I just prevented myself from getting into an accident.
A word of encouragement for Katie: If she decides to drive again, I'd recommend she take a defensive driving course. I have a class A commercial driver's license, which enables me to drive everything from school buses to 18-wheel trucks so I do know how to drive defensively. You must take into account that at any time of the daylight hours, at least ten percent of the other drivers out on the streets are legally drunk. At night, it's even higher.
