U.S. Declares Public Health Emer.: Swine Flu

The whole context:

In an interview on NBC's "Today Show," Matt Lauer asked Mr. Biden, "If a member of your family came to you . . . and said, 'Look, I want to go on a commercial airliner to Mexico, and back within the next week,' would you think it's a good idea?"

That is A PERSONAL QUESTION... not a MEDICAL QUESTION! He's asking him WHAT he'd DO with HIS FAMILY.

The vice president replied, "I would tell members of my family -- and I have -- I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now. . . . It's not that it's going to Mexico. It's [that] you're in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft. That's me." He added, "So, from my perspective, what it relates to is mitigation. If you're out in the middle of a field when someone sneezes, that's one thing. If you're in a closed aircraft or closed container or closed car or closed classroom, it's a different thing."

He's talking about WHAT HE'D do with HIS FAMILY, not for the public. Not you.
So what's good enough for the rest of us is not good enough for his family? I see. He's showing his true colors.

And Reba, do you agree with Biden? Yes or no? It's a simple question. Do you want to risk your health or your children's health by taking them out to places that could be a potential breeding ground for flu?

Kinda funny because you have paranoid tendencies and have stated you've stockpiled canned food but you're upset with Biden's comment about what he would do with his family?
If airplane travel isn't safe for the Biden family, then it's not safe for anyone's family. If it's safe for the public, then it's safe for his family. Which is the truth?

Stockpiled food??? I have a small pantry cupboard about the size of a linen closet in my kitchen. I don't have a separate food freezer. I don't even have a basement for storage of food.

I'm not "upset" about Biden's remark; others seem more upset about my posting it. Go figure.

Nice how you twist his words. I am sure you're so upset that Joe doesn't care about the rest of us!!! He should! Even though CDC and the White House said not to panic, perhaps, you are right... they should tell us we should do the same as Joe is doing with his family!

If a week passes and we have 10,000 cases of flu, Joe's advice may not sound so bad? Or what if it never happened (and I hope so), you'll just make fun of his PERSONAL decision, right?

Please get real.

I posted the article as it was. I didn't twist his words. Anyone can read the transcript and see that those were his own words.

I'm not upset. You're the one using multiple "!". :)

What do I need to "get real" about? Those were Biden's real words. Why does that upset you? Are you disappointed that Biden doesn't care what happens to you? Or are you afraid that Biden might know something about the swine flu that the government isn't sharing with you?

Just take easy on her, no need to act like mean at her.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed how filthy the inside of a jetliner is? I recall seeing a television program a year or so ago where they showed how seldom the seats and armrests are sanitized, posing a health risk to airline travellers. I have no idea what they do now as far as sanitizing goes.

Maybe passengers should be issued HAZMAT suits and respirators?

I haven't been on a plane in many years; we prefer to drive. But I believe what you say about lack of cleanliness on planes. With airline budget cuts I suspect that "housekeeping" will be further reduced.

Exactly. And as I said prior, it is a well known fact that virus spread more readily in confined spaces.

No where did Biden say that air travel was not safe, either for his family or for the rest of the country. All he said was that he would advise his family not to take the risk. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Everyone else is free to advise their own families. If you think the risk is worth it, take it. If you don't think the risk is worth it, don't take it. Thank God we live in a country where we are free to make those decisions regarding our own families.

So, in other words, you don't think that flying is worth it, either. Aren't you glad you have the freedom to make those decisions for yourself.

hhmmm...... I'm flying over to seattle tomorrow.... hope I won't catch anything :hmm:

I hope you don't either, but you know the risk and are free to decide for yourself whether you think it is worth it. Just as the Biden family is free to make that decision for themselves.

If air travel is safe then why do you call it a "risk"? If it is safe why would he advise his family to not use air travel? Didn't Biden have enough smarts to realize how his words could impact American air travel business?

Yes, he's free to make imprudent remarks that can hurt air business during times of economic hardship. We are also free to note his remarks.

big difference between me and Biden is that Biden's words to public carries with authoritative weight. Just by reading his transcript as provided by Reba - I just groaned and facepalmed myself. I guess I could say that this is another case of gaffe on his part.

We drive because we can't afford to fly, and that's been true for years. It has nothing to do with swine flu.

Biden has the freedom to make decisions for himself and his family but he also has the responsibility to take his lumps when he feeds pandemic paranoia.

Safety is relative. And the virus that is currently spreading adds to that risk. Obviously Biden gives the American public credit for having a bit of common sense and not adding meaning to his words that were not intended. The question was not what he would advise all Americans to do, but what he would advise his own family to do. You are attempting to fulfil a political agenda based on a single personal decision regarding how he would advise his own family to avoid contracting a virus. And if you think Biden's statement is going to have more of an impact on air travel that the concern that is already out there regarding contracting the virus, then you certainly don't give the majority of Americans credit for being able to form a logical thought.

Biden is not responsible for the drop in air travel. The virus is. He did not personally go to Mexico and release the virus in America. Get real.

seriously??? I cannot believe you're saying that. Do we need to give you an example of how one man with authoritative voice can create a ripple effect?

Not if you have the ability to listen and comprehend. The question was what he would advise his family. He answered as to what he would do in regard to his own family. Had he said that he would advise them to go about their daily lives with no concern or need to take precautions, he would have been criticised for not having enough concern for his own family so how can he have concern for other Americans. Some people simply use anything to promote their own anti-Democratic agenda.

in other word....... people = "oommmfffgggggggggg this is a pandemic!!! <stockpiling their homes with drugs, food, etc>

I thought you said that what he stated wasn't credible. Don't give Americans much credit for being able to think for themselves and make their own decisions, do you? Nice one, Jiro. Yeah, we are all a bunch of non-thinking atomatons that just blindly follow anything that someone says. Personally, I can't believe that you are attempting to turn a statement made about advise to his own family into a political agenda. Puh-leeze.

Oh, please. People have done same for years in face of any kind of threat, either perceived or real. Might I remind you of the irrational response to Y2K?
