ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Investigators have recovered an 18-wheeler and talked to the driver in connection with a hit-and-run that killed two deaf students.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Robert Bates has come forward.

Bates is a person of interest in a crash on the Florida Turnpike near Fort Pierce Monday night.

Investigators say Mariah King and Vincent Mathews, two former students from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, stopped to change a flat tire on their car when a big rig hit them from behind.

Mariah and Vincent, according to Mariah's mother, were engaged.

Troopers have also recovered the 18-wheeler. Surveillance images from a toll plaza camera showed the tractor-trailer with front-end damage and a man, believed to be Bates, at the wheel.

Vincent Matthews' s brother attended me and my wife's baby shower. He made us a photo album of the event. His family is devastated - please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. He is deaf and is from Russia ( Николас Мэтьюз ) and a friend of mine.

my prayers to the loved one who lost their cheirsh couple... rest them in peace.
