Translator collapses during Gaddafi's speech

It probably would have been easier on her if she had just stopped listening to Gaddafi and started making stuff up. Funner, too.

"I have been quite clear that the world needs to come together and agree on this one fact: Nick is by far the cutest Jonas brother. I mean, Kevin and Joe are alright, but Nick makes me giggle like the little schoolgirl I used to be. Tehehehe! For those countries who do not officially recognize this fact, I will immediately unleash the wrath of Libya on you!"

I'd listen to that and even cheer him on. "Yeah Muammar! You tell them who's boss!!! Damn Kevin and Joe loving rogue regimes."

I like Gaddafi.

People who are considered to be batshit insane are usually the most fun to watch/listen to. You know you're going to get a show and who knows, they might actually make some sense!

Which, in this case, he actually did. Aww, too bad people are too busy playing the "game" to notice.

Did we give the poor woman sanctuary after she screamed "I just can't take it anymore?"

Ha ha... I agree. They make good copy for the media. I remember the media saying that the late Jerry Falwell made good copy. I think Gaddafi is even better.

I'm going to take a stab at what you meant by that. Everyone else is engaged in petty squabbling while you've risen above the fray and as such, you're one of the few who can see the truth clearly. Is that about right? If not, please explain- I'm curious.

I think you're correct. I'm just here to comment on what I feel is petty party squabbling but the matter of the fact is that neither party has the solution or our interests at heart.

I think George Carlin would get a kick out of the health care debate.

To an extent, I think you're right, at least with politicians, interest groups, unions, corporations, etc. trying to push their own self-interest in Washington. That's a large reason why I oppose more power in Washington. But for the rest of us, you can't deny the sincerely-held philosophical differences about the best way to govern ourselves.

One thing, DD, the administration, past and present, caters way too much attention to special interest groups (i.e. lobbyists) rather than to focus and get their work done. And I wonder why the BHO promised many times during his campaign runs by assuring the public that lobbyists would not run his White House. The WH is run amok with lobbyists that he doesn't mind having.

PolitiFact | Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials - Obama promise No. 240:

One of the reason not to trust "In BHO we trust."

:topic: Thread has absolutely nothing to do with lobbyists.

He's not really that off topic and he's also pretty much right. Our officials spend a good deal of their time pandering to special interest and lobby groups. That's also on both sides, so I'm not picking on Obama specifically. It's just fact and how things are done; sad as it may be.

I hate lobbyists. They just continously gum up the works and make the govt even less efficient. It sure didn't help when BHO made the promise on lobbyists did he turn into a big lie and embraced his own lobbyists to the core.

Fred Thompson was a registered lobbyist.

As an interpreter, I thought this was an interesting story about translator abuse. I had great empathy for the overused translator.

However, I guess everyone is finished discussing the translator issue, so we can now lock this thread.

:locked:

Before this thread gets locked, my old interpreter approached me and had asked me for legal advice, because I'm a diplobrat. She asked me if it was possible to sue a diplomat. Her friend (ASL interpreter) was punched in the face a few times by a Russian diplomat, because Russian diplomat wasn't satisfied with her interpreting skills.

It's interpreter abuse.

What made them think they could hold up a rapid-fire speech for such a lengthy period of time?

Ouch!

Hmm, it's that old "diplomatic immunity" problem. :hmm:

I'm curious why the terp continued with that Russian after the first punch in the face?

Mods, please let's keep this thread open after all, as long as it stays on translator/interpreter topic.

:ty:

Yes, that was really expecting too much. He spoke longer than expected, strayed from his prepared speech, and put the whole burden on that one translator.
