Tracking your laser printing

Have you heard about this before? It was news to me.

CAREFUL WITH THOSE NASTY NOTES

"...We have recently learned that the federal government has required markers on all documents printed with color laser printers. If you get a jeweler's loop or some magnifying instrument you can see little yellow dots scattered in the printing. These dots identify your particular laser printer. If you have registered your printer by serial number ... you're nailed!

Guess it's time to get an ink-jet printer."

Why? Do you send lots of incriminating notes?

They've been able to do this with typewriters for a long time. I'd bet if your ink jet printer has a smalll defect (maybe it smudges the black or the paper guide always wrinkles a paper some way). It can be linked that the note came from that printer. At least enough to make them look closer at you.
