My niece just had her first birthday and she can't hear (the doctors are unsure whether or not it's permanent).
My sister (my niece's mother) asked me to ask you all for toy suggestions. She has 2 older children and most of their baby and toddler toys were sound-based toys. My sister would like to find some visual-based toys for the baby. Does anyone know of any?

Try anything that has shapes and colors. That will help the kid develop understanding for shapes and colors. :thumb:

get toys from Fisher Prices or Little Tikes. Most of them are not noisy. Mostly are umm hands on. I don't know what they are called but alot of toys have lights comes on (even noise but still considered visuable). I have a kid who just turned one last saturday, he got a lot of wooden toys..it, they are great, educational and developmental toys. They are by Melissa and Doug....

Yeah....get old fashioned toys rather then stupid pieces of electronic hunks of junk! They are more enriching then overpriced crap.

Also there is not a drawback to those sound-based toys-- most of the times you could feel its sounds playing. Feel the vibrations! It gives you another "bonus"-- it is a vibrating device-- suitable for many deaf infants!
When I used to work in the infant lab on-campus in high school, I always hold the toy to feel the sounds so I can "react" to it along with the babies who of course reacted to the sounds by smiling, gasping, or raising their eyebrows. I liked the feeling of the sounds played because it got a rhythm to it...
There are zillions of toys that have flashing lights, images, et cetera... try to get those toys that have "buttons" to press and something will happen (other than having sounds, of course. Flashing lights are popular among the infants-- despite their ability to hear).

Try Fisher Price or Little Tike toys, they have prenty of toys that babies and todders can feel the vibrating devices and also they have lights in them too....

You can find them at Toys R Us! ;)

Actually, a lot of parents try banning vibrating toys because they promote similiar feelings to sex vibrators. ;)

That is simply ridiculous. Parents stifling their children's sexuality. Besides, I think the last thing the child is thinking as it holds a vibrating toy is "I wonder what it would feel like in my nappy?"

It's a good thing you "think" that the last thing a child would be thinking. It is very common for a child to masturbate in front of the others, and in public places. Especially female toddlers.

Just look it up. The reason why you don't hear about it is because parents are not comfortable discussing the subject; but it is pretty common. They'll use such simple objects like a pillow to arouse themselves.

Honestly, how are the parents stifling their children's sexuality when the puberty doesn't hit till they're 10 or 11? How is encouraging a child to go on with its sexuality a benefit?

I agree that Fisher Price or Little Tike toys are the best toys. That's what I always got for my boys when they were younger.

Well, I remember back when I was breastfeeding with my last baby, and my little daughter copy-cat me and pretend to breastfeed with her doll !!!!

That's so ridiculous, maybe they should stop watching too much porn movies for heaven sake....

I think some parents are going a bit overboard on some things, if there is a toy out there that a parent would not approve then don't buy it for your child, there's no reason to go out there and try to ban them...cause every parents don't think alike!
