Tornado Kills 17, Injures 200 in Ind., Ky. 1 minute ago

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - A tornado ripped across southwestern Indiana and northern Kentucky early Sunday, killing at least 17 people, wrecking homes and knocking out power to thousands, state and county authorities said.

The death toll was expected to grow, they said. About 200 people had been injured.

The tornado touched down near Henderson, Ky., and jumped the Ohio River into Indiana at around 2 a.m.

At least 12 people were killed in the Eastbrook Mobile Home Park in Evansville, said Annie Groves, chief deputy coroner for Vanderburgh County. She said she expected the death toll to grow because an unknown number of people were believed still trapped in debris at the park, which has about 350 homes.

"They were in trailer homes, homes that were just torn apart by the storm, so they're just now getting in there trying to find people," Groves said. "It's just terrible."

Indiana homeland security spokeswoman Pam Bright said five other people were confirmed dead in adjoining Warrick County, east of Evansville, where the Ohio River city of Newburgh was struck.

Bright said about 100 homes were destroyed and 125 others were damaged at the mobile home park.

but we didnt have a tornado outbreak this year.. just hurricane outbreak thats all..

yes it is sad to hear about people being killed by the tornado and hurricanes.. we have to deal with it as it is the way of life.. everywhere we are being killed by earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsuamni, and so on..

We have to pray for those who are unlucky in this sad time.. :(

That's awful news!

That's because George Bush Jr ignored our earth environment too long. Glaciers are melting too rapidly due gas greenhouse. It looks that he is in trouble with other broken laws, and he will be likely impeached before his term is over. :bye:

A lot of this stuff is due to natural climate cycles. I was watching the news tonight and they were discussing it; there was a similar violent-weather cycle in the 1940s and 50s. When I looked at statistics from the National Hurricane Center, I could find evidence of cycles occurring even in the 1880s and 1890s.

Yeah, people could think that it's the first time things had been really bad when they haven't seen long cycles in weather activity in their entirely over 10s, 100s or 1000s of years. I wrote about the discovery of cycles thousands of years long for hurricance activity here.
And Miss P, I'll be sure to bump my toe on the 28th to make sure something bad happens on that day. ;)

Hmm...

Earthquakes...

What's next... an asteroid will hit Earth!? I hope so! Heh!

If it is a category 7, the military should tell the truth that they have a stargate so that we would able to move to a new homeworld.

 Tornadoes Hit Iowa, Killing at Least One By MELANIE S. WELTE, Associated Press Writer

WOODWARD, Iowa - Tornadoes swept across central Iowa on Saturday, ripping up farms, destroying homes in several towns and sending college football fans running from a stadium for shelter.

At least one person was killed in the storm, two others were hospitalized, and a gas leak forced authorities to evacuate part of Stratford, a town of about 746 residents 50 miles northwest of Des Moines.

"Half the town's gone," said Bob Smith, who has lived in Stratford for 12 years. He said he ran from his camper as the tornado touched down.

Search teams later found the body of another Stratford resident, Lucille Runyan, 80. Her daughter-in-law said Runyan's son had been with the team that discovered her. Another woman was pulled alive from the rubble, searcher Scott Bergman said. Authorities said at least two dozen homes in the town were destroyed.

In Woodward, 30 miles to the south, 20 to 40 homes were severely damaged, Dallas County Sheriff Brian Gilbert. He said emergency crews had searched house-to-house and hadn't found any victims by evening.

"The big problem right now is power lines are down and gas lines are ruptured," Gilbert said. "We are encouraging people to stay out of the area."

National Weather Service meteorologist Craig Cogil said it appeared that at least three tornadoes touched down Saturday afternoon.

In Ames, football fans gathering for the Iowa State-Colorado game were cleared from the stands and told to take shelter in the nearby basketball arena as the tornado sirens sounded. The storm hit on the edge of the city, where city spokeswoman Susan Gwiasda said the damage was mostly broken windows and downed power lines.

"We dodged a bullet with the track of that storm," Iowa State University spokesman John McCarroll said. He said officials had prepared for the chance of dangerous weather during the game.

Tornadoes are rare this late in the year. There have been 23 November tornadoes in Iowa since 1950, all but six of them recorded in the years 1975 and 1988, according to Weather Service records. Last weekend, however, another tornado ripped through western Kentucky and Southwest Indiana, killing 22 people.

On Saturday, at least two tornadoes hit in Boone County, with major damage in the Boxholm and Pilot Mound areas, a few miles south of Stratford, a dispatcher said. A convenience store in Woodward was also damaged.

Richard Albracht, 59, had headed for his basement in Woodward when he saw shingles start to fly and heard the sirens.

He said he went outside after the storm passed and found several homes damaged and an empty restaurant with only one wall left standing.

"It's pretty bad. There's houses destroyed and roofs off of houses," he said.

John Kiley and his wife were watching television at their home in rural Woodward when they heard the warning.

"I saw it two, three minutes before it hit," Kiley said. "My wife said go to the basement. I said no. We got in the car and went down the road. I looked out, it hit our house."

His house, barn, garage and another building were severely damaged, and many of his sheep were injured, neighbor Doug Jimeson said.

"There were sheep everywhere," Jimeson said.

;) Yes, it's a good time now to heed warnings, etc....they're there for a good purpose--to help save lives....Although, the tornado that hit Evanston, Indiana a little while back, most people were asleep and not hearing the sirens going off...which brings to my attention, for the 'Deaf/Hoh' who would otherwise not be able to hear these advance warnings, given that these warnings are put in place most of the time within minutes of getting hit...is there any 'new' technology being implemented to help alert the Deaf/Hoh? If not, then it might serve a very good cause to 'invent' such technology that will also help save the lives of the Deaf/Hoh communities.
