Tom Cruise has made an unusual purchase for his fiancee Katie Holmes — one that will let them see the development of their baby. "I bought a sonogram machine," Cruise says on ABC's "Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005," to air Nov. 29 (10 p.m. EST).

Excerpts of the interview are published in the latest issue of People magazine, on newsstands Friday.

The 43-year-old actor said the couple will do their own sonograms, which show fetus development with ultrasound waves. Cruise said he will donate the machine to a hospital after the baby is born. Sonogram machines range in cost from $25,000 to $200,000.

Holmes' pregnancy was announced in early October. The couple, who have been dating since April, became engaged in June.

"We are gonna get married next summer or early fall," Cruise told Walters. "We don't have a date set yet."

Cruise said he didn't know if the baby is a boy or a girl. He has two children, Connor, 10, and Isabella, 12, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman. It will be the first child for 26-year-old Holmes.

 Whatever happened to having the element of surprise at the baby's birth? Isn't that what makes it all so worth it after 9 months? IMHO, he could've used the money wisely and donated it to the unfortunate for Christmas. Chris says "Money can't buy happiness" and he's right.

I agree with all of you. :) Tom could've used the money for something else like charity....I have never heard of other people owning their own personal sonogram machine....I mean, what if their baby is born, and then what? Have more kids? What if she never could have them again?
Like Cookie Monster said, "Money can't buy happiness"....I agree 100%. :)

Whatever happened to having an expert to detect their baby for any health problems, hmm? :squint:

Tommy is becoming stranger as the years passed by. His religion must have warped him, tsk.

I just read that he will donate the machine to the hospital after the baby is born....so that answered my question (that's why I asked what if after the baby is born, and then what?).
Still, he should've done better and spend his money wisely.

money?

are you kidding me? $500,000 is pocket change to him. i put a set of $15,000 wheels on his motorcycle..he paid cash to my boss......and put another $50,000 deposit on a custom build up.
he will most likly give the machine to a clinic after the kid pops out.

I thought Doctors had to do sonogramsbecase to much time under one can cause damage to the unborn child , I remember somesort of uproare when these place opend up doing baby pics of baby not born yet.

I know Tom is pretty cool but I have done ultrasounds for 20 years and even Tom would not be able to navigate some of these very complex machines. And everyday do an ultrasound, yea I remember when everyone was attacking us because we opened 4d studios. I guess its ok for the right people huh, preferrably people with lots of money!!!!

Hmmmm....well I guess that goes to show that it truely does take all kinds to make the world go round.
