Three-year-old treated for alcoholism

A three-year-old child in Britain has been treated in hospital for alcoholism.

The child, believe to have been given alcohol regularly over a period of six months.

Health managers would not give details of the child's condition citing patient confidentiality, but the child is thought to be the country's youngest alcoholic, the Press Association reports.

"We treat alcohol abuse very seriously and have specialist teams and experts on hand who are there to treat young patients with alcohol-related problems," a spokeswoman for the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust said.

Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act showed that the trust, which runs hospitals in Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield and Solihull, treated more than 70 children for alcohol abuse between 2008 and 2010.

The minors, between the ages of 13 to 16, were admitted for alcohol-related emergency treatment, and a further 106 teenagers were treated for addiction to alcohol during the same period.

Chris Sore, from the alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware, said under-age drinking needed to be tackled more than ever.

"Any child requiring hospital treatment for alcohol-related illness is a cause for great concern — not just because of the short-term risks associated with under-age drinking such as accidents, but also the long-term risks such as disrupted brain development."

I hope the 3 y.o's parents would no longer have custody of this boy.

FUCKING idiots to do that to an innocent child! I hate people who hurt children like that.

That was common among lower class Victorians. Gin. The modern equivalent is usually Benadryl.

Yes, I know about Benadryl...usually given to babies to knock them out and stop the crying...and it's still done today....same as for cough syrups that have alcohol in them....if anyone has ever been to the ICU unit at hospitals for infants, you will see firsthand many alcoholic & crack addicted babies there.....breaks ur heart to see them in the throws of withdrawal!...Not a pretty sight...

Yeah, it was quite common in those days. I believe whiskey was also popular among them as well.

Hmm. I hadn't known that. I don't like using this stuff unless I spray it on my hives cuz it will make me very sleepy if I take it orally.

The worst part about this story is that alcohol is one of the few drugs that, if you are addicted, can kill you if you quit cold turkey.

That is why it is harder to get an alcoholic to quit using interventions and social pressure. All of the other drugs people get hooked on, the withdrawal is awful. With alcohol it can actually kill you to quit, or even cut back, too suddenly.

I've even heard reports of a 8 year old russian boy who's a heroin junkie. I don't know if it's been confirmed though.

With Russia, I am not surprised. I am told they start drinking rather early there and it is encouraged, mostly for boys as part of 'manhood' although not every Russian drinks. But the Russian economy has been near death for a few decades now and with everyone depressed I am not shocked about the alcoholism and drug use in Russia. :(
