This is what happens

Like I said earlier, get rid of the alcohol at these games.

I admit that alcohol does cause problem when bad people happen to good beer, but I'm guessing none of these guys (including the victim) are the brightest of tools in the shed. Alcohol or not, I think these guys would start trouble anyway.

And, with over 30k people, at any given game, on any given day the great majority never has any problems.

Ban the idiots not the alcohol, that's my take.

It absolutely does have a negative effect on their decision making. Look at how many people have died (and gotten injured) in alcohol-related car crashes every year. You don't need a PhD to understand that too much alcohol can impair judgement and senses.

Looks like people are handling their alcohol better.

I'd say it's because of better crackdowns on catching drunks before they hit the road or at sobriety check points.

Fewer alcohol-related crashes occur when sobriety checkpoints are implemented, according to a report published in the December 2002 issue of Traffic Injury Prevention. This conclusion is based on a systematic review of research on sobriety checkpoints. The review was conducted by a team of experts led by CDC scientists, under the oversight of the Task Force on Community Preventive Services–a 15-member, non-federal group of leaders in various health-related fields. (Visit www.thecommunityguide.orgExternal Web Site Icon for more information.) The review combined the results of 23 scientifically–sound studies from around the world. Results indicated that sobriety checkpoints consistently reduced alcohol–related crashes, typically by about 20%. The results were similar regardless of how the checkpoints were conducted, and results were similar for short–term “blitzes” or when checkpoints were used continuously for several years. This suggests that the effectiveness of checkpoints does not diminish over time.

Handle their alcoholic drinks better? LOL. Yeah. Sure. When drugs are involved there is no such thing as people who are able to "handle themselves better" because the opportunity for abuse is always there.

Not just to bad people but to good people when one too many has been drunk. It's been shown that if you take away alcohol the atmosphere improves at these games. Plus, the stadium owners would be helping protect the lives of people on the road after the games.

Ask any cop how many times alcohol plays a role in the calls that they are sent on and they will tell you it's about 50% of the time. I may be exaggerating this only slightly but the percentage is very high based on my 18 plus years in law enforcement.

I personally know a few people that cannot drink alcohol....period!....And just like Kristina said, alcohol affects people in different ways.

I don't go to the games anymore, because of the drunks there...

This....and this! Well said.

Why do these riots happen? Why do sports bring out the worst instincts in otherwise reasonable people? Why do we take moments of civic unity and turn them into uncivil idiocy?

The simple answer, and maybe the most important one, is this: Everybody gets hopped up on adrenaline and alcohol. Sprinkle in some crushing disappointment. Add a mob mentality that lets people think they can get away with anything -- call it The Lack of Wisdom of Crowds.

One rioter told the Toronto Star, after setting a garbage can on fire, "This is releasing tension, man. What else are you going to do when you lose the Stanley Cup? You riot."

One of these days a city might find themselves at a cross road when riots after a game would cost a city so much money to clean up and repair damages along with the cost of police support and arrests may be forced to not have these games anymore.

I doubt that. I feel that the owners of the stadium will have the cost. Ticket prices will be jacked up higher to cover the cost of having a riot team on standby...

Could happen. Then again driving higher ticket prices would slowly bring down attendance number to the point when hosting these games would not be profitable any more.

Alcohol does bring out the worst in people. Even to good people.

Drinking alcohol can lead to disinhibition. Just look at Mel Gibson. He made quite a few colourful remarks about the Jews. He really does think that way of them. Otherwise, he wouldn't have said it in the first place.

Same could be said of these idiots that beat down the Giants fan. Without the alcohol, it might have stayed at the insult stage, not the full-blown assault stage.

Looks like MADD has made a difference. Also, the early years of the chart, I believe that under 21 could still drink legally in some areas.

In most provinces across Canada, it's 19. In Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, it's 18. However, in Manitoba, 16-17 can drink under parents' supervision.

Primal rage takes over. Some people are not able to show resistance to violence, it is in their true nature to be violent. Alcohol allow them to break down the wall and show their true self.

Exactly. I pointed that out in several posts. The alcohol does not create the situation. It simply disinhibits and makes it easier for the individual to act on what is already there. We need to address the tendency toward violence and hatred that is already present in the individual. To blame it on alcohol is to put a bandaid on a festering wound. The general public can't see it, but it is still there festering away.

The behavior is already manifest at the insult stage. The attitudes that create it are already present in the individual. That is what needs to be addressed if you are going to see any kind of change whatsoever in these instances occurring.

It is the same thing as drug issues. As many penalties as are attached to drug use, and it has done virtually nothing to address the issue of addiction and abuse in this society. Why? Because people get a false sense of security in thinking that others are being locked up for their drug use. Doesn't change a danged thing, though. Drug addiction and abuse are rampant in this country because it is not being addressed from the perspective that willl actually create change and prevention.

Sure, it's about breaking down the inhibition. There's no denying that. Alcohol does that. And can lead to making bad decisions, bad behaviors, and amplify ones own inner personality. Each person respond differently to the inebriating effects of alcohol.
