Opium Brides of Afghanistan | Newsweek International | Newsweek.com

This is a very interesting article but yet, it is also a sad one. It talks about how the opium farmers in Afghanistan gives up their daughters in hand for marriage to various lenders. Some of the girls who were gave up for a "loan bride" are as young as 5, 10 years old. Also, It was even noted in the article saying that a local farmer recently had to promise the hand of his 2-month-old daughter to free his family from an opium debt.

That's the sad history of opium farmers, owners, and users.

They get so addicted to something that they end up deep in debt... forcing themselves to "sell" their family members in order to pay off their debts.

I've read about a lot of this happening in Japanese history. :(

Yeah it is sad, indeed. Not only it happens in Japan but it does happen in various parts of the world. From what I know, poppies are more tolerable through the heat and the cold. The opium farmers are able to earn double or triple by growing it instead of wheat and corn. The money may sound good but to put yourself and your family at risk is never worth it.
