I think you probably have a very low bar for what counts as islamophobia, xenophobia, homophobia, etc. You're not going to convince someone to stop hating gays or foreigners when they don't actually hate gays and foreigners but just have differences in policy preferences.precisely. there you go.
hence.... a hero complex... something that a confused person tends to have because one would try to convert him/her for something that he/she is not.... on most cases. There are people who are very homophobic, Islamophobic, xenophobic, etc. You cannot really change them but people do try.
As for changing people, I was careful to say "if I thought I could influence him". Some people are just assholes and nobody can change that. However, if it's a close friend I've known a long time who started drinking heavily and hitting women, I'd probably try to convince him to get some professional help and plead guilty in court.
That's your decision.
