When people are naughty, Santa Claus would put lump of coals in their stockings instead of goodies. I'm not sure why the coals are in a bowl, though.

Maybe to punish their sweet tooth no choc. chip cookies n' milk. They were not good for the whole year. Crunch on some coal and a glass of water then their teeth break and crack in half when they bite coal again. Dentist emergency a powerful syringe shot of that good stuff that goes numb no pain ahhh !!!!! That is what the coal bowl could be for ( just joking )
