Ever wonder what the path of a Roomba looks like as it cleans your house? It's an amazing combination of randomness and precision, as shown by this long-exposure shot.

The shot was taken by shutting off all the lights in the room for 30 minutes and taking a long exposure of the path the Roomba took while cleaning up. It's beautiful and surprising. I always assumed it worked with using some sort of grid, but that clearly isn't the case at all.

And from a separate article..:
Roto Roomba mod allows it to pick things up, hand them to you

Sure, we've seen some wild Roomba mods, but overall it's pretty much a low-to-the-ground affair -- unless you get the cats involved, of course. That's apparently changing, though -- check out this robotic grasping system, which can pick up foreign objects and deliver them to you at about waist height. The system was 95 percent effective in picking up objects of all sizes and shapes during trials, and it was apparently quite simple to build and code.

Oh speaking of those roto roomba sidekicks, It'd be awesome to have that. :)

Seriously, I don't think I would want the roomba because it does not exactly cover the corner areas and things like that.

Although, it's interesting to see the pictures that does not have straight lines in the long exposure.

Actually, it can cover the corners. I have one and it can sweep anything from the corners.

Oh it does? I see. I was wondering about that because for some reason I was thinking about the round-type roombas that gets on the carpet to go on.

They are round. But they have brushes underneath and they can blow the dust, dirt, speckles, grain around so they can catch them.

I see. So, in overall, is it worth to get one? Is it good for any heavy-duty vacuuming?

Well, I've used the older first generation model and it was sleek at that time it came out. Over the years its lost its ability to be as clean as it could be out of the box, but that could possibly be the wear and tear applied to it. I mean, same thing happens in vacuum cleaners.

I think they've came out with newer versions though. Newer ones generally should have better technology and more precision since they utilize previous gens and improve them.

I think it makes a difference if you have hardwood or carpet floors, as hardwood it is generally easier to clean.

Here's a youtube of the first generation in action, there's plenty more there as well!

Well, it's handy to have one around for frequent cleaning so you don't have to do heavy-duty vacuuming as often.

You will still have to do heavy-duty vacuuming once in a while, but iRobot makes it much easier so you don't have to do it so often.

I want one! But I agree with Banjo, it's not ment to replace all cleaning, it's just a basic helping hand.

The long exposure was ultra-cool! I want one! I'm tired of vaccuming my cat's constant shedding :)

Yeah, that's true.

I know some people who just get those things and never do their own work. Even when we let robots do our job, we need to it on our own from time to time.

(If we were to let them do it all 100%, we would eventually suffer the same fate as one seen in Terminator.) :Ohno:

As for the long exposure picture, if we had a picture of that thing in action... we could measure the actual width of the thing and determine how much was actually missed. :)
