OCALA, Fla. -- A teacher's aid accused of verbally abusing a 7-year-old special needs child has been fired.
The Marion County School Board dismissed Deborah J. Adams on Tuesday. She did not challenge Superintendent of Schools Jim Yancey's recommendation to fire her.
Adams and teacher Rhoda Richardson were accused of verbally abusing a Maplewood Elementary School student who has autism.
Both women have been on unpaid leave since October, when the alleged abuse was brought to the school district's attention. The alleged abuse was secretly recorded by the child's mother, who left a digital recorder in the girl's backpack.
Richardson's attorney, Robert Bradshaw, requested a hearing before the board. He said the evidence against his client was obtained illegally.
