LOS ANGELES (AP) — The McDonald's-bashing documentary Super Size Me on Tuesday won the Writers Guild of America award for documentary screenplay.

The prize, the guild's first in that category, recognized writer Morgan Spurlock, who also starred in the film and became ill after a month-long experiment eating McDonald's fast food three times a day.

"The movie has exceeded any expectations we ever had," Spurlock told The Associated Press after accepting the award in a ceremony Tuesday night at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. "I am so overwhelmed of all the praise it's gotten."

Asked whether he was surprised the film contributed to McDonald's scaling back on super-size menu items, Spurlock said: "It's a testament to the power of filmmaking. Documentaries are more important now than ever."

Super Size Me, which became an $11 million hit, is nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary. Spurlock also won the Sundance Film Festival's documentary-directing prize.

The Writers Guild award honors nonfiction writers who "collect images from reality and shape them into a story, not only to document the human condition, but to illuminate and inspire the world we live in."

Nominees for the award included: Ross McElwee, for Bright Leaves ; Julia Bacha and Jehane Noujaim, Control Room ; Paola di Florio, Home of the Brave ; Harry Thomason and Nickolas Perry, The Hunting of the President ; and Jessica Yu, In the Realms of the Unreal.

Spurlock is my hero. I dunno how many AD'ers watch his documentary movie though... IMHO, it is great documentary movie.

I've seen half of that movie...and then I fell asleep lol

but really, it seems pretty gensis of how he created the movie...it was actually so true about those fast food restuants and all...although it is true that America is the fattest country in the world...lol

*burp* I must've ate too much bacon today...lol

welll thats too bad, i didn't watch it much, because it got toooo boring for me by too much talking... of course docementary.. so i stopped that movie and redirected on doing other things. heh. :-/

I did watch the documentary when it first came out on the DVD, and I enjoyed it a lot.

Yes, I do still eat McDonald's meals once in a while. Even after seeing the special features on the DVD. I got a strong stomach. :)

But... a good documentary I must say.

I gotta applause you for your strong stomach :P

I couldn't.. *puke*

Hmm... I think I'll make a movie based on me eating at Taco Bell every day. ;)

I haven't seen the movie, but I have heard about that guy and his fast food odyssey. It is true that he put on a substantial amount of weigh, and I believe his blood pressure also became appreciably elevated. But to put this in perspective, he ate the great big burgers and fries at McDonald's every single day for 30 days.

In my opinion, this was a case of substance abuse taken to the nth degree, the "substance" being calorie-laden food with a high fat content. Millions of people have a drink every day without any negative effect. But a person who drinks every day to the point of intoxication most likely has a problem, and that person's body will almost certainly be affected in a negative way by their alcohol consumption.

I'm sure there are people who eat McDonald's food every day, and maybe they will see this movie and start having second thoughts. But I don't think it speaks that loudly to the person who occasionally indulges in a Big Mac or an order of fries.

No negative effect...? Well, numbers and numbers of studies on consequences of drinking these soda pop indicated otherwise. Heck, in America, diabetes is now in number #1 in top ten list. That said much, really.
