Students At Lancaster County Prom Receive Shot Glasses - Local News Story - WGAL The Susquehanna Valley

LITITZ, Pa. -- Warwick High School students held their prom May 2 and now school officials are having second thoughts about the party favor given to its juniors and seniors.

At last year's prom, a picture frame was given to the girls and a money clip was given to the boys. This year, however, the prom party favor was a little different.

As the juniors and seniors left the party at Willow Valley, prom organizers gave them shot glasses.

"Unfortunately, this year the junior class didn't have quite as much money," said Assistant Principal Scott Galen.

The school ordered the glasses from a prom favor Web site. They were a less expensive option but perhaps, officials said, not the smartest.

"It's certainly not the message we were trying to send," said Galen.

Prom Favor Sends 'Mixed Message'

Senior class president Phoebe Baum helped plan the prom last year, and she knows the kind of favor options that are out there.

"It's always like a champagne glass or something like that, hoping that kids won't do that, which is kind of like a mixed signal," said Baum.

There are several adults on the prom committee, and administrators talked with them about the shot glass decision but said they want to keep the specifics of those conversations private.

"It was a poor choice, poor decision," said Galen.

But Baum said it was probably just a hasty decision.

"I think a lot of times decisions get made and lots of things are happening at once and it wasn't like, 'Let's all sit down and decide to have a shot glass,'" said Baum. "It's like, 'OK, this is what we have money for. Let's just do it.'"

Galen called it an oversight. The principal signed off on the favors, but the purchase order didn't itemize them as shot glasses. The paperwork simply said "prom souvenir."

"That's how it kind of slipped by and we weren't even aware what the item was," said Galen. "It will not happen again, we can guarantee you that."

The administration said it takes responsibility for the shot glasses. The school ordered more than 450 of them.

im sure Juniors and Seniors at High School should not getting drinks too much as shots because of behaviors during prom night for Juniors and Seniors and principal wouldnt like that.

IF i have my own kids somedays i would not let my kids have drink alcoholic during party or prom PEROID that my rules if im not at home or whatevers i will give my own kids suspended for no alcoholic! OR police can checkups if you drink or not!!
