State Board holds off on closing school for the deaf | KTVB.COM | Boise, Idaho News, Weather, Sports, Video, Traffic & Events | IDAHO NEWS
The state school for the deaf will remain open - at least for now.
The Idaho State Board of Education tabled a decision yesterday on closing the Gooding-based school for the deaf and the blind.
In a meeting yesterday in Twin Falls, the board opted to delay the decision to give state education leaders more time to draft legislation for outreach programs instead for deaf and blind students.
Board members say they will revisit plans to close the school in October.
The proposal to close the school is the result of more than two years of study by the state board's transition team. The proposal also calls for a short-term overnight facility for children in the Treasure Valley that would temporarily house students before they can return home.
Last year, a legislative committee approved recommendations to expand outreach programs throughout the state. Earlier this year, seven positions were cut at the Gooding school to hire more people for outreach programs.
